Supervisor - Defiance Hospital

Job Summary

The Facility Nursing Supervisor is responsible for maintaining continuity of patient care in the absence of the unit nurse managers/directors in all areas of the hospital.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of hospital personnel to maintain continuity of a safe and efficient standard of care.
  • Makes patient care assignments according to staff ability and patient needs.
  • Evaluates care given by others under his/her direction and provides appropriate changes and feedback.
  • Maintains accountability for own care and care delegated to others; adheres to ethical and legal standards.
  • Seeks assistance from appropriate resources when needed.
  • Visits nursing units to oversee nursing care and evaluate patients’ condition.
  • Evaluates census and acuity level of patients per unit; collaborates with ROC (Resource Optimization Center) and other department leaders for patient care assignments.
  • Works with supply chain leadership to expedite efficient delivery of materials (medications, equipment, linen, food, and information services) to patients, physicians and staff.
  • Responds to emergency codes throughout the hospital and directs staff as appropriate.
  • Promptly escalates issues through the chain of command.
  • Notifies on‑call personnel of impending emergency surgery.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess overt and covert physical, psychological, and sociocultural needs of all patients.
  • Applies basic principles of effective communication to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  • Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to provide quality care in relation to patient assignments and workflow activities.
  • Uses a problem‑solving approach to address patient and unit issues and makes realistic recommendations for change.
  • Supports the mission and vision of the organization; adheres to BSMH policies.
  • BSMH nurses practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts and intention of the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred)

Required Licensing & Certifications
  • Current RN license in the state where they are working or covered by the compact (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support (required)
  • PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support (preferred)
  • ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred)
  • Nurse Executive Certification or designated specialty certification (preferred)
Experience
  • 2 years nursing experience with a minimum of 1 year clinical experience (preferred)
  • Charge nurse or management experience (preferred)
