Pay Range

$71,300.00 – $98,000.00 annual (base salary).

Position

Plant H&S (Health and Safety) Specialist – Defiance, OH. The role is a high-energy, self-motivated individual who drives continuous improvement and excels in safety and health performance. Reports to the Complex Safety Manager.

Day to Day Responsibilities

Supports and promotes safe practices aligned with company commitments, policies, and compliance requirements.

Acts as an OSHA regulatory compliance resource.

Leads or participates in incident investigations (injury, property damage, near-hit, environmental deviations, etc.) and root cause analysis, and works with the plant operations team to determine appropriate corrective/preventative actions.

Performs risk and hazard assessments/inspections to determine employee risk/exposure and suggests/drives actions to mitigate/reduce them.

Establishes and drives continuous improvement in the facility's safety monitoring and recordkeeping systems to ensure compliance with all JM policies and federal regulatory requirements.

Assists plant operations team and JM Corporate Safety to evaluate and determine appropriate proactive safety strategies for projects that may impact the facility or employees.

Develops action plans for safety activities, coordinates the plant Safety Committee team, performs follow-up on these activities, and reports status to the Plant Manager.

Facilitates safety and health training for all plant personnel.

Compiles and tracks all documentation for compliance with all safety and health policies and required activities (Work Notifications, Inspection Records, OSHA 300, etc.).

Supports plant initiatives toward Lean, Kaizen, Cost Reduction, 5S and other facility improvements.

Ensures compliance with all safety and health policies, procedures, and programs.

Ensures all safety and health metrics and reports are completed and communicated in a timely manner.

Assists with workers compensation cases.

Serves as training coordinator for all H&S-related trainings through Safety Skills and other computer-based training (CBT).

Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Safety and Health or Environmental, or professional certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, or recognized professional certification in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent degree.
  • Prior safety-specific training (OSHA 30 Hour, Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health, etc.).
  • Two years’ experience in a safety role in an industrial setting or four years of relevant industrial experience in a JM facility.
  • Comfortable working in a plant environment.
  • Working knowledge of federal safety and health laws (e.g. OSHA, EPA, etc.) and ability to work with outside agencies and contracted employees.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to use software applications to analyze, monitor data, create reports, and presentations.
  • Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, extensive walking, confined spaces, wear a respirator (if applicable) and handle exposures to hot/cold environments.
  • Excellent communication, training and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated root-cause analysis skills (RCCA, 5‑Whys).
  • Leadership skills to direct personnel, implement initiatives, supervise teams, and follow up on activities.
  • Analytical ability to assess complex situations and apply problem solving strategies.
  • Ability to work independently.
