The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for temporary instructor positions to create a pool for advance and short‑notice hiring. These positions may be part or full‑time. Start dates vary based on programmatic needs. We seek candidates to offer high‑quality teaching in American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish who fully embrace NIU’s mission of providing opportunity to a diverse student body.
Candidates must demonstrate native or near‑native fluency in the target language and should practice current foreign language teaching methodologies centered on a communicative approach.
Teaching load will be no more than 12 credit hours during the fall semester and 12 credit hours during the spring semester; other related duties may be assigned.
MinimumRequired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in the target language
- Expertise or evident potential for quality teaching in the target language at the undergraduate level
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); serve as an active participant and ally in working toward DEI initiatives
- Effective interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to working effectively in a collegial, multicultural environment
- Experience teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds
- Experience in the use of instructional technology and proficiency in different teaching modalities (online/hybrid/blended)
- Typical instructional/classroom management
