English Instructor
The Department of English at Northern Illinois University (NIU) is creating a pool posting for anticipated openings as it seeks full-time or part-time instructors to teach face-to-face classes in the first-year composition program.
The load for full-time instructors is usually 12 credit hours per semester and would normally include the first and second semester first-year writing requirements, as well as potential to teach developmental writing. This position has occasional opportunities to teach upper-level classes as well—depending on candidates' specializations. The appointment is for up to one year subject to program needs but is renewable.
Instructors are on continuing contracts after five (5) years of positive programmatic reviews and continued program need. NIU draws its predominately first-generation students and transfers from the cities of Chicago and Rockford, their suburbs, and the rural areas of the region.
The Instructor is a temporary (non-tenure track) position with duties that include teaching first-year composition and related courses. Possibility of teaching other courses as needed. Teaching up to four (4) sections of first-year composition per semester or other duties as assigned.
A master's degree in English or a closely related field. A minimum of two years of experience teaching first-year writing. A PhD in English or a closely related field. Experience teaching at an institution with a student body similar to NIU. Experience teaching developmental writing. Course work in rhetoric and composition. Experience with developing composition pedagogy. Experience with multimodal composition, inclusive pedagogy, collaborative writing, and/or technical writing.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date - 08/16/2025. Anticipated Appointment End Date - 05/15/2026. Percent of Staff Year - 0.75. Standard Hours Per Week - 37.50. Salary - $39,366.00 - $41,472.00 for 9 months for full-time employment. Hourly or Semi-monthly Pay Rate/Range - $2,187.00 - $2,304.00 ppp for full-time.
