Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
- The University Honors Program transcends disciplinary boundaries to help students broaden their horizons while reaching their goals. Students from every college at NIU are part of our program. Our role is to mentor them and connect them with impactful experiences, so they graduate with the ability to adapt to life's ever-changing conditions. Participants are intellectually curious and committed to finding and pursuing their passions.

Position Summary
- The Honors Advisor is a student-centered support position that mentors and guides students in the University Honors Program through all aspects of program requirements. This position plays a central role in daily contact with students through the implementation of advising and retention strategies with current students and recruitment of new students representing all six undergraduate colleges s position reports to the Associate Director of Academic Strategic Planning within the University Honors Program;

and, as such, will work to implement program specific, as well as campus-wide advising initiatives that allow Honors to further expand upon the delivery of best practices to students. The essential functions of this position require an in-depth understanding of university policies and procedures as they relate to the mission of the University Honors Program, combined with a capacity to work independently and effectively with diverse constituencies within and outside of the university.

Good verbal and written skills must accompany an ability to carry out complex tasks in a well-organized, efficient, and timely manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Advising – 45% Advise current University Honors Program students related to the fulfillment of curricular and co-curricular requirements. Event Promotion – 15% Schedule, coordinate, and execute Honors Day, which includes physical space reservation, food, invitations, program creation/printing, onsite logistics, etc. Maintain a presence at events to promote Honors to students, parents, community colleges, and other NIU offices, including Orientation events.

Honors Engaged Program Support – 10% Oversee and support the Honors Engaged co-curricular program including participating in the evaluation of student submissions, entering and promoting experiences in Suitable, entering Honors Engaged milestones into People Soft or otherwise helping to coordinate this co-curricular effort. Assist in Academic Strategic Planning – 5% Assist the Associate Director for Academic Strategic Planning as necessary with tasks to improve the student experience of the program, including the freshmen retreat and new advising initiatives.

Collaborative Efforts – 5% Collaborate with student workers on projects and initiatives Development – 5% Work with Honors staff and campus partners to develop advising and recruitment materials. Enrollment Management – 5% Honors enrollment management including student communication, registration drives, Navigate appointment campaigns, Slate marketing communications, and other similar activities. In-Course Contract Support – 5% Oversee and support Honors students on all aspects of the In-Course Contract process related to curricular requirements.

Other Related Duties – 5% Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service) - Bachelor's Degree Additional education or other formal training in an area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.
