Location:
On-site — DeKalb or Urbana, IL (with possible support to other Mid‑Continent science centers)
Support cutting‑edge water and earth science as a Geospatial / Scientific Analyst. You'll build and analyze geospatial datasets, develop scientific applications, and turn complex environmental data into usable products — directly enabling research and resource‑management decisions at a federal science center.
Key Responsibilities- Perform the full suite of GIS tasks using ArcGIS (and extensions), ERDAS, ENVI, Geo Server, and open‑source tools; acquire, create, edit, and manage vector and raster datasets
- Conduct spatial analysis and modeling, including image processing, classification, and feature extraction
- Develop and maintain scientific applications and data pipelines; program in Python, R, C++, C#, .NET, and/or VBA with proper documentation
- Provide statistical support (e.g., R, SAS) and relational database management (Access, MySQL, PostgreSQL) for spatial and non‑spatial applications
- Create and maintain FGDC/ISO‑compliant metadata; support data life‑cycle management and archiving
- Support GPS/telemetry data collection, differential correction, and format conversion as needed
$95,000 - $99,840 a year
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, computer science, hydrology, environmental science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Hands‑on experience with ArcGIS and geospatial data management
- Programming proficiency in one or more of:
Python, R, C++, C#, .NET - Experience with relational databases and metadata standards
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal background investigation; U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency
- Experience with remote sensing / image processing (ERDAS Imagine, ENVI)
- Experience with high‑throughput or high‑performance computing
- Background supporting water science, environmental modeling, or a federal science agency
