Driver’s License Examiner (Part-time) Compensation
The hourly rate for this position is $19.06. The position is part‑time and limited to a maximum of 24 hours per work week. Part‑time employees may not exceed 999 hours each year. Selected candidates may be required to work Saturdays, as needed.
Position SummaryThe Driver’s License Examiner (DLE) is a first line of homeland security for the State of Oklahoma. Responsibilities include conducting driver license interviews, examinations (visual, written, and road), inspections, and determining eligibility for driver’s licenses or state in compliance with state and federal regulations. The Examiner issues or denies driving privileges or state at designated locations throughout an assigned district.
Responsibilities- Interview applicants to determine license type, review documents, verify identity, and assess eligibility.
- Explain to applicants why an application cannot be accepted and procedures to resolve disqualifying issues.
- Evaluate medical, physical, or mental information based on state and federal standards; determine waivers or restrictions; advise on waiver procedures.
- Conduct in‑depth vehicle safety inspections of vehicles, buses, and commercial vehicles; test operators’ knowledge and ability.
- Administer vision, written, pre‑trip, and skills tests; evaluate performance to assess knowledge and compliance with laws; advise on improvements.
- Establish driver’s license records while maintaining confidentiality and security of information.
- Assist the Legal Division in evidence gathering for potential legal action on fraudulent applications.
- Respond to inquiries from motor license agents for identity verification, providing information on laws and procedures to law enforcement and the public; recommend changes in driver’s license laws, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct interviews and hearings related to suspensions, revocations, restrictions, modifications, temporary licenses; review accident reports; render final decisions; issue orders and complete required forms.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of state and federal driving privilege laws, physical requirements, exemptions, and issuance of licenses; knowledge of commercial vehicles, safety equipment, and licensing requirements; knowledge of various license types and interviewing principles.
- Ability to conduct interviews, inspect engines, operate all types of motor vehicles, administer tests, verify authenticity of identification documents, communicate effectively, operate computers, and touch‑type.
The preferred minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in any field; or four (4) years of technical clerical office work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Have prior customer service experience.
- Have familiarity with DMV processes and procedures.
- Have typing proficiency of at least 50 words per minute with minimal errors.
- Schedule may vary and require flexibility, including some early or late shifts, weekends, and occasional overtime.
- Work location may vary depending on agency needs.
- May require occasional travel; reliable transportation may be needed; possession and maintenance of a valid Oklahoma driver license is required.
- Work in a storefront setting; noise level usually mild but depends on customer traffic.
- May require standing up to eight hours a day and lifting 10–50 pounds regularly, with assistance as needed.
