Position: Field Biologist I

The Field Biologist is responsible for conducting biological surveys, wetland delineations, and resource analyses as part of environmental projects. The role includes data collection, field surveys, agency coordination, environmental permitting, and technical report authorship.

Location:

Brownsville, TX or Del Rio, TX. The position is seasonal (12 months or longer).

Responsibilities
  • Monitor construction activities for adherence to Best Management Practices along the Texas/Mexico border.
  • Implement construction monitoring protocols, studies, and short-term field surveys.
  • Conduct natural community, wildlife habitat, stream, and vegetation assessments.
  • Collect, interpret, analyze, and summarize data for reports.
  • Apply scientific expertise to interpret and present results of field and desktop studies.
  • Interact professionally with project managers, coworkers, teaming partners, and clients.
  • Coordinate with and obtain data from federal, state and local agencies.
  • Recommend alternatives to proposed projects or changes to minimize environmental impacts.
  • Participate in briefings, seminars, conferences, training sessions, and public meetings on environmental matters.
  • Maintain familiarity with federal and state environmental regulations, especially those related to botanical resources, wetlands, waters, and wildlife.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, natural resources, wildlife management, botany, wildlife biology, ecology or an equivalent field.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze information, make sound decisions, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of statistics and database management.
  • GIS experience including ArcGIS or similar platforms.
  • Technical writing and editing proficiency.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage concurrent projects and adapt to shifting priorities and timelines.
  • Positive, can‑do approach.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience.
  • Field experience with sensitive species surveys, avian surveys, wetland delineations, vegetation monitoring, and related assignments.
  • Experience completing environmental permitting projects.
  • Knowledge of rare, threatened, or endangered plants and animals in the Southwestern region.
  • Experience with specific species groups (e.g., plants, birds, mammals).
Working Conditions
  • Duty station in Brownsville or Del Rio, Texas.
  • 40 hours per week, up to 10 hours per day.
Physical Requirements
  • Pass pre-employment and post-employment drug/alcohol tests and background check.
  • Travel and work in field locations, including remote and potentially challenging terrain.
  • Work outdoors independently with a team of other scientists.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
