KMH is a fast-growing, privately held mechanical contractor with over 200 employees across HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Commercial divisions. At $40M+ in revenue and projecting 20% average annual growth, we are building the financial infrastructure to match our trajectory and we need a Controller who has operated at scale and/or through growth.
This is a hands‑on leadership role at the center of the business. You will lead the accounting function, develop and coach the accounting team, and serve as a key financial partner to the CEO.
Position OverviewThe Controller owns the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of KMH’s financial reporting. This is a working leadership role — you will be active in the close process, reconciliations, job costing, and financial statement preparation, not just overseeing others doing it.
This role is ideal for someone who has thrived in operationally complex, privately held companies, particularly in the project based or job costing environments and who brings the discipline and confidence to build scalable processes in a growing organization.
This position is supported by a dedicated Payroll and Construction Accounting function. The Controller leads a team of 8 and owns accounting operations, financial reporting, and team development.
Key Responsibilities- Own the monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close process — actively participating, not just supervising
- Prepare and review financial statements and supporting reconciliations
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger and all financial reporting
- Lead, develop, and coach the accounting team day‑to‑day
- Ensure GAAP‑compliant financial reporting across multiple divisions
- Oversee job costing, WIP reporting, and project‑based financial tracking
- Establish and continuously improve internal controls and accounting workflows
- Partner directly with the CEO to provide accurate, timely financial visibility
- Coordinate with external CPA firm and tax advisors
- Support bonding, banking, and lender reporting requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5 or more years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role
- Experience in a company with $20M+ in revenue with demonstrated complexity
- Demonstrated experience owning financial statements in a privately held, operationally focused company
- Strong GAAP knowledge and practical application
- Proficiency in Quick Books Enterprise or comparable accounting systems
- Proven ability to lead and develop accounting staff
- Experience in construction, mechanical contracting, home services, or job‑costing environments
- Experience in multi‑division or multi‑entity organizations
- Track record of building or improving accounting processes during periods of significant growth
- Accurate, timely close process the business can rely on
