Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) candidates to provide basic life support, pre-hospital medical care, and transportation for the ill and injured throughout Volusia County.
Note on applicationThis position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice. Availability for around-the-clock shifts is required and includes days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Hiring range for Emergency Medical Technician: $17.46 per hour. EMTs with less than 1 year of experience can expect an offer at the minimum rate. There is shift differential pay and lead EMT pay described below. See additional notes for required certifications and pre-employment requirements.
Responsibilities- Perform assessment and treatment consistent with the United States Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Technician – Basic pursuant to standing orders from the EMS Medical Director or designee.
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment used for prehospital assessment and care.
- Safely operate vehicles in accordance with state law and prevailing standards.
- Acquire, manage, and protect privileged health information in accordance with federal and state laws and county policies.
- Complete required medical and billing documentation accurately; provide evidence of medical necessity for billing when applicable.
- Prepare and complete other reports and documents as necessary (e.g., controlled substance accountability logs).
- Maintain credentials required by the state and the EMS Medical Director.
- Testify in court or give depositions as needed.
- Interact with patients, coworkers, other health care providers, and the public professionally and courteously.
- Attend work on a regular and consistent basis and respond to all emergency situations as directed.
- Adhere to all Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- May be assigned to other locations based upon operational needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Graduation from high school or completion of a GED.
- EMT Certification - Florida, BLS Provider Card, ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700 and Florida Driver’s License preferred.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license at time of appointment; obtain a valid class E Florida driver’s license within 30 days and maintain thereafter.
- A Florida EMT-Basic certification and a 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operations course (or equivalent) within 30 days of hire.
- CPR credential (adult, child, and infant) as permitted by the Florida Department of Health.
- Approval by the EMS Medical Director to practice as an EMT.
- Provide proof of completion of FEMA training courses prior to hire: IS-100.c, IS-200.c, IS-700.b (see below for course links).
IS-100.c – Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS-100; IS-200.c – Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response; IS-700.b – An Introduction to the National Incident Management System. Courses are available at no cost a.gov/is/crslist.aspx.
Employment RequirementsEmployment is contingent upon a successful pre-employment background check and completion of the division's physical assessment prior to hire and annually thereafter. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record and not be excluded from participating in insurance programs (e.g., Medicare/Medicaid).
All employees must be non-tobacco users and nicotine-free at the time of hire and must refrain from all tobacco products at all times as a condition of continued employment.
Important Certifications & Documentation- Must possess a valid driver’s license and Florida EMT-Basic certification.
- CPR credential (adult, child, infant); 16-hour EVOC course completed within 30 days of hire.
- Proof of FEMA training (IS-100.c, IS-200.c, IS-700.b) prior to hire.

Physical demands:
Heavy to very heavy work; lifting >100 pounds; extensive physical activity in pre-hospital care.
Environmental demands:
Ability to tolerate indoor/outdoor environments, exposure to extreme conditions, fumes, and potential biohazards.
Mental demands:
Ability to work under stress, read and comprehend instructions, and communicate effectively.
