Overview

The County of Volusia is seeking a Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee/I/II, depending on experience, for the Road and Bridge Division. This position is located at various locations throughout Volusia County and will perform semi-skilled and skilled manual work in the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic control signs, pavement markings, and roadway striping.

Note: This position is mission essential; the selected candidate must be able to report to work to provide continued service for all man-made or natural disasters.

Salary (illustrative): Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee – Starting $16.15/hr;
Traffic Maintenance Technician I – Starting $16.79/hr;
Traffic Maintenance Technician II – Starting $17.76/hr.

  • ALL TRAFFIC MAINTENANCER TECHNICIAN LEVELS: follow instructions; attend work regularly; adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances; may be assigned to other locations; respond to emergency situations; perform other duties as assigned.
  • TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN TRAINEE/TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I
    • Assist in preparation and assembly of all materials, tools and equipment required for installation and maintenance of traffic signs.
    • Assist in layout, installation, removal and maintenance of traffic pavement markings (painted, preformed, and hot thermoplastic).
    • Operate equipment including long line paint striper, thermoplastic trailer and applicators, forklift, 2-1/2 ton flatbed truck and various pickups.
    • Assist sign shop personnel with application of reflective, vinyl and acrylic sheeting on sign blanks, barricades or other devices; may operate computer-assisted sign fabrication software/hardware.
    • Assemble, install, maintain and repair traffic control signs and assemblies, including work zone traffic control devices; ensure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
    • Document all work performed; assist with inventory control and sign shop warehouse to maintain stock levels.
    • May serve in on-call status for emergency responses after hours and for other divisions as needed.
    • Attend work regularly; adhere to ordinances; may be assigned to other locations; respond to emergencies; perform other duties as assigned.
  • TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN II
    • Provide direction and support to lower-level technicians as directed by supervisors.
    • May serve as crew chief on pavement markings crew.
    • Perform preliminary layout for placement of traffic signs and roadway pavement markings to ensure compliance with standards.
    • Prepare sketches, drawings, and MOT plans for minor roadway construction and maintenance activities.
    • Read and interpret technical engineering drawings and work orders.
    • Safely operate and maintain striping equipment, electronic message boards, arrow boards, etc.
    • Perform computerized traffic sign fabrication and custom signs (design, weeding, sheet application, film transfer, die cut letters).
    • Ensure accuracy of documentation; assist with inventory control and documentation; prepare and maintain work orders.
    • Serve in on-call status to provide emergency response on a rotating schedule for after-hour emergencies or to support other divisions or provide temporary traffic control.
Minimum Requirements

All Traffic Maintenance Technicians must have a High School diploma or GED and a valid Florida driver's license at time of hire and thereafter.

Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee – $16.15/hr This role provides semi-skilled manual work in fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic control signs, pavement markings, and roadway striping. Requirements include: must obtain a valid Florida Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL) within one (1) year of appointment; and must obtain IMSA Temporary Traffic Control Technician and Level I Signs and Pavement Markings certifications within one (1) year of appointment.
