The work you will do:

DOT Internship – D5 – Fall 2026 Semester / August to December

This position will contribute to providing a safe transportation system that ensures the mobility of people & goods, enhances economic prosperity, and preserves the quality of our environment and communities. This is a learning and mentoring internship where you will gain knowledge of the FDOT transportation system, Department processes, safety initiatives, and more.

Your specific responsibilities:

As a member of the FDOT Office of Safety Team you will contribute to providing a safe transportation system that ensures the mobility of people & goods, enhances economic prosperity, and preserves the quality of our environment and communities. This is a learning and mentoring internship where you will gain knowledge of the FDOT transportation system, Department processes, safety initiatives, and more.

The candidate should have an interest in improving safety for all users of our transportation system. On the FDOT Office of Safety Team you will have the opportunity to be involved in and assist with setting Target Speed on projects, identifying effective countermeasures, establishing educational materials to share with the public, and research innovative ideas from around the country and beyond.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of:
Basic knowledge and interest in transportation safety and workplace safety.

Skills in:
Use of a personal computer (PC) and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Organization, time management, and task prioritization.

Ability to:
Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Minimum qualifications:

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide identification supporting citizenship or authority to work for the duration of program participation. Participants are required to comply with all statutes and rules and the Department's policies, procedures, regulations, and Code of Ethics.

Preferred qualifications:

We are looking for a highly motivated team member that is a college level student (junior, senior, graduate levels) and desires to work on a dynamic team and with other departments within FDOT District 5 to identify innovative solutions on projects, in educating the public, and more related to safety.
