The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Senior Maintenance Worker for the Coastal Division. This position is located in various coastal locations throughout the County of Volusia.

Major Functions

Responsible for the maintenance of public restrooms, beachside parks, wooden beach walkover structures and vehicle ramps providing access to the beach. Duties also include performing a variety of general maintenance activities in areas such as light carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, etc.

Candidate must be willing to work under all types of inclement weather, early and late shifts, weekends, and holidays which are part of the requirements for this position.

Work shifts range in times from 6:00 AM to 9:30 PM, Monday–Sunday, to include weekends and holidays.

Illustrative Duties

These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Performs work at the lower levels.
  • Operates chainsaws, circular saws, reciprocating saws, brush cutter, edger and clippers, power washers and other equipment used in landscaping, park and roadside maintenance, and right of way cleaning. May operate commercial power mowers, ATVs, and litter vacuum.
  • Operates various types of equipment including, but not limited to, trucks and tractors.
  • May assist trades workers in laying out work and with maintenance and repairs of coastal assets.
  • May assist repair technicians and journeyman in duties including. Assists in performing field maintenance and service work on tools and equipment.
  • Assists with application, storage, mixing and loading of herbicides and insecticides.
  • Assists trades and project workers in brick laying, pipe laying, painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, roofing and other construction tasks.
  • May serve as a lead worker on a small work crew.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • May be assigned to other locations based upon operational needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in construction and/or general maintenance work. OR High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Worker.

A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the required experience. Examples of equivalent experience would include but not limited to janitorial duties, landscaping duties, carpentry, park or golf course maintenance, etc.

Possession of Public Health Pest Control certification within six (6) months of appointment may be required, depending on position assignment.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • All knowledge, skills and abilities of lower levels of Maintenance Workers.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, and construction.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this equipment.
  • Ability to fill out daily work sheets and other required forms.
  • Ability to operate light trucks, trailers, small tractors, mowers and similar automotive equipment.
  • Ability to safely tow and back a trailer.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
Physical Demands

Ability to see, talk, and hear. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate motorized vehicles and other assigned equipment. Ability to pull, push, lift, carry (75 lbs.) and grasp, handle, climb, balance, reach overhead, bend and stoop. Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrain.

Environmental Demands

Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including but not limited to heat, humidity, wind and cold. May require exposure to chemicals, dust, insects, noise, fumes, and confined spaces.
