Job Title

The County of Volusia is seeking a Trades Worker for the Road and Bridge Division's Drainage Task Team.

This position is located in DeLand, Florida, and will be responsible for semi-skilled work in one or more of the trades requiring the ability to perform tasks with little supervision.

Illustrative Duties

Duties vary depending on location/position of assignment.

  • May install and repair underground drainage piping, structures and restoration.
  • May perform concrete work (e.g., sidewalks, driveways, free form, etc.).
  • May do grade shots for pipe and structure installation.
  • May perform small engine repair.
  • May perform general and limited tasks in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, and repair of buildings, apparatus, and facilities with close supervision.
  • May operate all associated equipment to include but not limited to medium-size weight construction equipment and vehicle (e.g. tractor, front-end loader, mini excavator, skid loader, dump truck, pick-up truck, and trailer).
  • May perform preventative maintenance duties required for a variety of equipment.
  • May load and unload trailer equipment and materials.
  • May act as crew leader in supervisor's absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations
Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or possession of GED and two (2) years of experience in maintenance and repair in plumbing, mechanical pipe installation and repair, concrete or brick work. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license. Must obtain a Florida Class A CDL within 6 months of appointment. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

The preferred candidate having met the minimum requirements, will have a Class A CDL, at least two (2) years of experience in forming, pouring and finishing concrete, as well as at least two (2) years of experience with building catch basins, pipe laying, and installing sidewalks and driveways; and at least two (2) years of experience with asphalt mechanical work and shoulder repair work.

Skills & Abilities

Depending on assignment:

  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of one or more of the building trades.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the trades to which assigned.
  • Ability to perform shop math.
  • Ability to safely operate medium-size weight construction equipment and vehicles (e.g. tractor, front loader, mini excavator, skid loader, dump truck, pick-up truck, and trailer).
  • Ability to safely load and unload trailer equipment and materials.
  • Skilled in working from written and oral instructions, blueprints, and rough sketches.
  • Ability to perform work in one or more of the trades without close supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

Physical Demands :
Medium work to heavy work. Ability to see (depth perception, color, acuity), hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach overhead, climb, grasp, lift, carry, pull, push up to 100 pounds. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) is necessary to operate a motorized vehicle. Ability to traverse uneven terrain. Environmental Demands:
Inside and outside work. May require exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, and rain), chemicals, dust, confined spaces and poor ventilation. Mental Demands:
Ability to read and comprehend work orders, safety and operational instructions, maps, blueprints, mechanical drawings, instructions, procedures, memos. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data and details to others.
