Originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, Pea Patch Island also became a Union prison camp during the Civil War, housing up to as many as 12,595 Confederate prisoners of war at one time.

A variety of seasonal Interpreter Positions are available at Fort Delaware State Park.
Lead Historical Interpreter: $19.00 - responsible for supervision of the Fort Delaware State Park staff when the Interpretive Programs Manager is not around. They will assist with training of staff and on-site programming. They are also responsible for research, program development, care of interpretive objects, and assisting with staff training each year. Duties may vary for each facility.
Historical Park Interpreter: $17.50 - is responsible for assisting with program development and conducting interpretive programs that will increase the public's awareness of the historical significance of their surrounding environment and foster the appreciation, enjoyment and utilization of Fort Delaware State Park.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as scheduled.

- Interpret the history of Fort Delaware State Park and/or the Port Penn Interpretive Center on a daily basis to the visiting public.
- Lead school and public historical programs tied to State standards to increase awareness and understanding of Delaware’s cultural resources.
- Develop and maintain exhibits, educational and historical site material.
- Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.
- Plan, organize and conduct interpretive walks, programs, and tours.
- Perform custodial services in historic sites and offices.
- Set-up, monitor and provide support for park programs and special events.
- Willing and able to work in period costume.
- Must demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

- Six months experience working with children and young adults such as environmental educator/classroom assistant, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, or youth volunteer.
- Experience with care and handling of animals.
- Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
- Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
