The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position is responsible for providing on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks
. The role involves job site coordination
, dispatcher/train communication
, and managing various types of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas
.
- Jobsite Protection
:
Ensure the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error-free and consistent with the rules. This includes radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers
, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits. - Daily Briefings
:
Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure adherence to the safety requirements of the railroad. - Documentation
:
Prepare and submit required electronic forms
, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment
, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports. - Equipment Handling
:
Manage and place signs
, derails
, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds
, as needed throughout the day. - Safety Training
:
Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training
. - Communication
:
Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules. - Additional Duties
:
Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs
.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
- Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
- Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualification requirements for protected roadway workers.
- Proficiency in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge).
- Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
- Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
. - Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
- Proficiency with electronic communications
, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g.,
Microsoft Office Suite
).
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of 2 years in track and/or construction experience
.

- 2 - 5 years of track and/or construction experience
. - Prior experience working within a railway company
. - Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent.
