Upper School Learning Specialist

The Upper School Learning Specialist provides direct academic support to students through individualized and small-group sessions, in collaboration with the Learning Support Team, which includes the Upper School Counselor, the Upper School Learning Specialist, and the Academic Support Specialist. This role requires the ability to diagnose and assess student needs, implement differentiated strategies for neurodiverse learners, and serve as a liaison among students, parents, external service providers, and educators.

The Upper School Learning Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all students receive appropriate interventions and accommodations to enhance their educational experience.

The Upper School Learning Specialist supports faculty through group and individual professional development to ensure they have the tools needed to serve a wide range of learners. As a member of the Learning Support Team, the Upper School Learning Specialist should be an expert on learning differences and neurodiverse learners and knowledgeable about current research and best practices.

Essential Responsibilities Academic Support
  • Review psycho educational testing and individualized Learning Profiles in order to ensure appropriate accommodations and supports are in place
  • Review Learning Profile accommodations with students and families
  • Collaborate with the Upper School Counselor to ensure College Board accommodations are in place, when appropriate.
  • Refer families to psych-ed testing and tutoring services.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure accommodations are being implemented and to collect data on how/when students are using their accommodations.
  • Communicate with parents and/or educational specialists about students' learning needs
  • Maintain documentation of supports/interventions provided to students
  • Collaborate with the Academic Support Specialist, the Upper School Counselor, and the Writing Center in coordinating student support.
  • Oversee tutor schedules for school-based sessions. Develop and maintain a network of effective tutors.
  • Coordinate and monitor make-up work for students with extended absences of three days or more
  • Collaborate with the counselor, school nurse, and athletic trainer when students have concussions
  • Student Support
  • Run one-on-one and small group support sessions for Upper School students
  • Target study skills, organization, and preparing for assessments
  • Re-teach material to prepare for re-assessments
  • Help students navigate long-term projects
  • Conduct student observations as needed and develop strategies for classroom success
  • Run make-up work sessions during study halls or club time for students who need temporary support
  • Supplement classroom instruction to target areas of need
  • Monitor Academic Notes to provide individualized and specific support as needed
  • Faculty Support
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure adherence to student learning protocols, support teachers in implementing accommodations in learning protocols
  • Support teachers in accommodating classroom instruction and materials to meet the needs of diverse learners
  • Brainstorm and discuss academic strategies and/or accommodations for teachers to use with students in class
  • Attend grade-level wellness meetings and provide feedback for student academic support
  • Present on best practices in learning support and provide teachers with resources for working with neurodiverse learners.
  • Attend conferences and meetings of students with academic needs at teachers’ request
  • Contribute to the development and/or revision of learning services practices and systems.
  • Logistical Responsibilities

    The following tasks will be carried out as needed:

  • Assist faculty with students who need extended time to complete assessments, when available.
  • Run a club in the Upper School
  • Cover study halls or lunch duties
  • Assist with the proctoring of semester one and two exams, and with any make-up exams.
  • Complete various duties, directed by the Head of the Upper School
