This is a tenure-track, full-time faculty position in the English Department, at the Delaware Campus, with primary responsibilities in teaching 15 contact hours per semester, service, and professional development. Overload and summer contracts are available. Faculty move through the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor; they are represented by CSEA, the Columbus State faculty Union.

The English Department focuses on the teaching of composition, with offerings in creative writing, literature, and developmental reading and writing. Columbus State is an open-enrollment, community college located in downtown Columbus. The College serves a diverse student population and has a large dual enrollment program. Faculty are required to be residents of Ohio and based on campus.

This position will be focused on first-year composition instruction. The successful candidate will be engaged with emerging trends in the field and the Department seeks a leader with an innovative approach to student success in the first-year college classroom.

Instruction & Student Learning
  • Teaches assigned courses as scheduled and assumes primary responsibility for and oversees the curriculum in conjunction with the Department’s policies, ensuring the rigor of programs and the quality of instruction.
  • Designs curriculum to foster talent in students while modeling inclusive teaching strategies.
  • Considers individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities.
  • Participates in identifying students with academic or other needs and responds by utilizing appropriate resources.
  • Uses technology appropriately for the nature and objectives of courses and programs and communicates expectations concerning the use of such technology.
  • Keeps accurate records in accordance with the Faculty Handbook and departmental policies.
  • Maintains attendance records, determines and submits grades timely, and communicates progress feedback and other relevant information to students throughout the semester.
  • Creates and maintains accurate syllabi incorporating departmental, college, cross-college, and instructor requirements.
  • Participates in selecting appropriate materials to support course curriculum in accordance with College guidelines.
  • Conducts classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule.
  • Employs and assists in the design and development of appropriate assessment techniques to measure student performance in achieving course goals and objectives.
  • Be a facilitator of learning in a virtual environment.
Student Engagement & Advisement
  • Creates a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, and interaction among students and faculty.
  • Maintains posted office hours in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Uses technology to assist in communication with students.
  • Encourages a sense of community among students for learning inside and outside the classroom.
  • Advises potential or current students within the discipline about the program, career, or transfer options to assist with degree completion.
  • Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.
Continuous Improvement
  • Promotes continual improvement as part of the cycle of teaching and learning by assisting in maintenance of instructional materials and facilities; contributing to the development, selection, and improvement of instructional materials and facilities; providing guidance in the development and design of course descriptions, outlines, and syllabi; and recommending curriculum modifications or new curricula.
  • Completes all mandatory performance evaluation measures within specified time limits and participates in required training.
  • Shares best practices with colleagues and participates in instructional, departmental, or institutional research to improve educational effectiveness.
