Position: Elementary School Counselor
Location: Mispillion Elementary School
Reports To: Principal/Assistant Principal
Starting Date: August 2026
Position SummaryThe School Counselor promotes students' academic, social-emotional, and behavioral success by implementing MTSS practices, providing direct counseling services, and coordinating support with families, staff, and community agencies. The counselor monitors and analyzes student data, delivers classroom lessons as part of the related arts rotation, supports students and families in crisis, and collaborates with other school counselors, the Family Interventionist, and special education teams to ensure student needs are met.
Additional duties may be assigned by the principal.
- Hold or be eligible for a valid Delaware Elementary School Counselor standard certificate in accordance with 14 Del.
C. §1522. - Knowledge and/or experience working with families to access support from state and local agencies.
- Support MTSS implementation by managing and analyzing student data and using data to guide interventions.
- Participate in Student Improvement Team meetings to review student needs and coordinate services.
- Provide individual and small‑group counseling to support students' academic, social‑emotional, and behavioral development.
- Work directly with students and families in crisis to help them access immediate and appropriate assistance.
- Participate in risk assessments, threat assessments, and crisis response procedures consistent with district protocols.
- Collaborate with other school counselors, the Family Interventionist, special education staff, and other support teams to address student needs.
- Follow up on recommended services and conduct home visits, when necessary, to ensure supports are in place.
- Deliver classroom lessons as part of the related arts rotation.
- Identify students' strengths and challenges and assist in resolving educational barriers.
- Support attendance interventions and collaborate with attendance teams as needed.
- Support after‑school family meetings and assist in organizing academic celebrations.
- Counsel students regarding attendance, study skills, academic progress, and educational planning.
- Participate in meetings related to special programs such as attendance committees, special education services, and IEP conferences.
- Communicate and conference with parents/guardians as needed.
- Provide in‑service training and consultation to teachers regarding student support needs.
- Maintain confidential student records in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.
- Serve as a liaison to outside agencies and make referrals to appropriate community services.
- Adhere to ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors and all district, state, and federal policies.
- Perform any additional duties assigned.
Ten‑month (10) full‑time employee.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated annually according to the Board's policy on professional personnel evaluation.
