Position: 2026-2027 School Year - Special Education Teacher - Autism - West Seaford Elementary
Location: Bossard Property

Special Education Teacher – Autism (West Seaford Elementary)

Position is for the  School Year at West Seaford Elementary School, a high-needs school.

Essential Job Functions
  • Applies strategies and techniques to foster independence, self‑reliance, and social skills.
  • Delivers lesson plans, presents learning materials, and conducts instructional exercises.
  • Monitors student progress regarding individual educational plans and goals.
  • Monitors individual students and/or small groups of students with autism during instruction and follow‑up activities.
  • Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in developing appropriate behavior.
  • Uses a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instruction level of children with autism.
  • Monitors students during classroom activities, recess, and field trips.
  • Operates and assists students in the operation of instructional aids and media, including computer‑assisted instructional equipment.
  • Maintains an orderly, safe, and positive learning environment.
  • Assists students with basic personal‑care activities as required (dressing, toileting, catheterization, feeding, grooming).
  • Uses good judgment to assist injured or physically ill students and to manage medical emergencies.
  • Assists students on and off the bus as needed.
  • Administers a variety of tests and records results.
  • Attends specialized training as required.
Additional Autism Specific Abilities
  • Behavior management strategies and techniques related to students with autism.
  • Demonstrates an understanding, patience, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
  • Recognizes and responds quickly to emergencies related to medical conditions of students.
  • Assists students with basic personal‑care activities such as dressing or toileting when needed.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and procedures to enhance a positive educational environment.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, district office administrators, or the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, and ability to differentiate instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Develops and adheres to Individualized Educational Plans outlining necessary supports, accommodations, and goals for each child.
  • Meets with parents and staff regarding the plan and makes necessary adjustments throughout the year.
  • Works with children who vary from mild to severe disabilities, using specialized techniques to help them reach their goals.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
  • Certification/License:
    Delaware State Certification as 1573 Teacher of Students with Autism or Students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities.
  • Subject or area certification also required.
  • Must provide evidence of successful PRAXIS II scores or a valid out‑of‑state teaching license.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children, Special Education, or a related discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Additional education requirements include: (a) graduating with a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a concentration in autism and severe intellectual disabilities from an NCATE‑recognized program, or (b) a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a major in special education and completion of at least fifteen credits in professional development focused on autism and severe intellectual disabilities, including specified content areas.
