Substitute Teachers and Paraprofessionals are needed for day‑to‑day and long‑term positions. Under direction of the Building Principal, the Substitute provides appropriate learning experiences for students, ensuring an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social and emotional development and supervising students in various school settings, monitoring equipment, materials, and facilities. Paraprofessionals assist teachers by performing tasks that promote student learning and well‑being, working individually or in groups to reinforce instruction and provide classroom management and clerical support.
Rateof Pay
- Substitute Teacher – High School Diploma/GED/Associate Degree (Class
C): $15.06 per hour - Substitute Teacher – Bachelor’s Degree or higher (Class
B): $19.06 per hour - Substitute Teacher – College student majoring in Education qualifying for a teaching license with 60+ credits (Class
B): $16.80 per hour - Substitute Teacher – Certified Teacher (Class
A): $23.86 per hour - Substitute Paraprofessional – Specialized (RISE, Foundations, Skillbuilders, Change Makers): $19.06 per hour
- Substitute Paraprofessional – Other paraprofessionals: $15.06 per hour
Substitutes are casual seasonal employees and are not eligible for benefits.
Physical RequirementsThe position requires frequent talking, expressing ideas, and conveying instructions. Employees must have normal cognitive abilities, sit or remain stationary for long periods, and may need to exert up to 50 pounds of force when lifting, carrying, or moving objects.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSubstitute Teacher
- Provide a safe and encouraging learning environment for all students.
- Follow instructional plans, lessons, and support activities to present approved district curriculum.
- Maintain accurate records, tests, and reports.
- Establish and maintain rapport and communication with students, school personnel, and parents.
- Implement effective classroom management routines and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor.
Substitute Paraprofessional
- Assist in providing a safe and encouraging learning environment.
- Demonstrate professionalism, maintain confidentiality, and accept constructive feedback.
- Support classroom teacher in instruction by engaging in planning, following teacher’s plans, and working with individual students or small groups.
- Support teacher in assessment by monitoring work, collecting data, and maintaining accurate records of progress.
- Assist with clerical duties, instructional materials organization, and maintain an organized work environment.
- Demonstrate teamwork, problem solving, flexibility, and cooperation.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by Principal or Director of Educational Resources or Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.
- Criminal background check and tuberculosis test.
- Provide identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), employment eligibility documentation, I‑9 completion, and Delaware Child Protection Registry paperwork.
- Complete a satisfactory reference check.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Ability to follow oral or written directions.
- Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, co‑workers, and the public.
