Part‑Time GED Program Instructor –

Possible Locations: Middletown High School, Appoquinimink Library, or Route 9 Library and Innovation Center.

Reports to: Principal/Adult Education Supervisor.

Training: The district may require training in Safety‑Care or a similar competency‑based crisis prevention intervention program as a condition of continued employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Have the flexibility to work afternoons or evenings from either 3:15 pm to 5:15 pm or 5 pm to 7:45 pm depending on the program.
  • Instruct in‑school, out‑of‑school youths, and/or adults in academic content areas to meet Delaware High School graduation requirements or instruct ESL/ABE students to gain level improvements.
  • Provide appropriate educational opportunities and instruction for each student, according to his/her needs and abilities and specific enrollment program.
  • If needed, prepare lesson plans in advance that match district and state curriculum expectations.
  • Keep accurate records, tests, reports, etc. as required by Delaware statutes and policies, Federal regulations, and School Board policy to demonstrate student performance.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport and communication with students, school personnel, administrators, and parents.
  • Establish an equitable classroom atmosphere conducive to teaching and learning and plan and use classroom time effectively.
  • Uphold school regulations as identified in teacher and student handbook and supported by board policy.
  • Work closely with counselors and staff to support students on a pathway to graduation.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.
Minimum Qualifications

Required: Eligibility for Delaware licensure and passing Praxis I (or CORE) and Praxis II scores for the position. Must be eligible for State of Delaware certification as a Secondary English, mathematics, social studies, science, or Spanish teacher, or Adult Education certification in ABE/ESL level(s).

  • Special Education experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Delaware State Content Standards, Assessment & Accountability.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly talks, expresses or exchanges ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.

Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Criminal background check and tuberculosis test.
  • Proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of an I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
