Music Teacher – Central Elementary
Position PurposeUnder the general supervision of the School Principal, the Music Teacher is responsible for developing students' understanding and appreciation of the art of music, including listening to a wide range of musical genres, periods, and styles. The role focuses on identifying, promoting, and developing each student’s talents in vocal and instrumental musical expression.
Essential Functions- Develop and administer music education curriculum consistent with district goals and objectives.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction.
- Organize balanced music program and lessons to allocate adequate time for preparation, rehearsal, and instruction.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs; provide individual and small‑group instruction as required.
- Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, as appropriate.
- Plan, coordinate rehearsals, and direct students in musical programs and performances outside the classroom.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Maintain accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement in students’ education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure student conduct conforms to the school’s and district’s standards, establishing and maintaining behavior standards needed for a productive learning atmosphere during practice, rehearsal, and performances.
- Coordinate with other professional staff, especially within the grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select, requisition, and maintain appropriate music supplies and instrumental equipment, keeping inventory records and ensuring equipment is in good working order.

EquipmentStandard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone. Use of music instruments.
Travel RequirementsTravels to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to play an instrument or instruments and conduct students in instrument playing (for Instrumental Music).
- Ability to teach voice, including singing, harmonization, and chorus (for Choral/Voice Music).
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self‑evaluation related to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
Works in standard office and school building environments.
Certification / License- Delaware State Certification as a Music Teacher (Certificate 1563) – details at
- Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
Teacher Certification – Delaware Code Title 14 Section 1500. A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.
