Senior Ship Superintendent

Position at Seaboard Marine This position is on U.S. payroll and based in Nassau, Bahamas. Candidates may already reside locally or be willing to relocate to The Bahamas. The role requires frequent travel; therefore, we are seeking candidates who are flexible and comfortable working in a dynamic, international environment. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Ship Superintendent is responsible for ensuring timely support for company vessels on all technical operating issues and for collaborating with other departments, fleet technical management, and other stakeholders. This support includes managing allocated repair and maintenance expenses against budget, overseeing technical management, and planning and managing maintenance, dry-dock activities, and regulatory compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Required

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive, licensed experience at sea, preferably at the Chief Engineer level, including demonstrated responsibility for shore-side vessel maintenance and technical programs.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with the application of Class Society, Flag State, and other international and local rules governing vessel operation and safety.
  • Project management skills and related experience.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills in English, sufficient to interpret and apply technical standards, write clear and concise reports, and follow regulatory documentation requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a complex, multi-location environment.
  • Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and standard reporting tools.
  • Experience with data analytics to support operational decision making.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments as required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel substantially, domestically and internationally, including on short notice, as dictated by business needs.
  • Ability to work across time zones as needed.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Act as the primary shoreside vessel manager overseeing the operation of the company's fleet of vessels.
  • Oversee fleet compliance with applicable regulations and company-specific programs.
  • Develop and maintain operational protocols and procedures, in conjunction with vessel technical managers, to meet service needs and operational efficiencies.
  • Act as the primary liaison with fleet technical managers (both owned and chartered fleet).
  • Follow up and ensure prompt action on incidents; implement corrective and preventative plans related to audit items, management report findings, non-conformances, and marine casualty reports.
  • Work with technical managers to plan and prepare dry-dock specifications; oversee ship repair and maintenance work during retrofit periods.
  • Monitor ship requisitions for spares, services, and consumables, and issue shoreside requests for materials and services as needed.
  • Coordinate with technical managers on evaluation of suppliers, new product proposals, and development of new resources.
  • Monitor, investigate, and analyze deviations from budgets and bunker consumption reports.
  • Visit vessels regularly to conduct compliance audits; inspect, review, and monitor the technical condition of vessels (owned and chartered).
  • Prepare reports and action plans to address items identified during vessel visits.
  • Evaluate bunker procurement for the owned and chartered fleet.
  • Review all third-party surveys and assist in ensuring that all reported defects are corrected.
  • Maintain detailed files for all dry docks/wet docks, special projects, and technical incidents.

Secondary

  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements and contribute to continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Perform related technical and operational duties consistent with the position responsibilities.
  • Perform other related managerial duties in alignment with the role's scope.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The employee must be able to travel via car, airplane, train, and other modes of transportation as needed.
  • The employee must maintain balance and hearing consistently throughout the workday.
  • The role frequently requires sitting, walking, turning or flexing the neck, twisting or bending the torso, and reaching between waist and shoulder height.
