Location: Milford

A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities of assembling a wide variety of mechanical units at workstations from engineered drawings and blueprints using standard work for assembly, as well as spraying Tri Armor on all assembled cold water basins. The Mechanic II is an experienced mechanic with a high level of proficiency in assembling a wide variety of mechanical units and is competent to work independently in the majority of functions.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Owns personal and team safety; observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.
  • Utilizes standard work to assemble mechanical support assemblies to specification.
  • Performs functions in the majority of assembly line stations, with the exception of welding and work centers such as the cowl area and fan build.
  • Performs all quality assurance tests in the Tri-Armor area as required by engineering.
  • Prepares and maintains daily inspection sheets and IPI forms in the Tri-Armor area.
  • Works all functions and stations of the Tri-Armor Line and passes sprayer certification test.
  • Operates equipment in a manner that maximizes productivity and quality.
  • Safely operates JIB cranes to lift, move and position components.
  • Assists and trains junior mechanics.
  • Continuously grows skills and expertise to flex to the maximum number of workstations.
  • Meets or exceeds production goals for the shift.
  • Maintains and sustains 5S in the department.
  • Fulfills the role of MI senior mechanic in his or her absence.
  • Aggressively upholds and supports quality and process standards.
  • Ensures individual activities embrace sustainability, reduce environmental impact, minimize waste, maximize recycling, and minimize energy and water usage.
  • Supports a culture of innovation by translating original ideas into business opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, and assigned.
Nature & Scope

Reports to the Team Leader, Station Leader, or senior mechanic as assigned. Work is primarily related to the home department but can be flexed to other departments as order demand dictates. May be assigned the training and mentoring of junior mechanics.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to pass the Tri-Armor sprayer certification test within 90 days.
  • Demonstrated understanding of submittals.
  • Knowledge of all operating and technical publications pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of the Tri‑Armor line, quality assurance, and safe handling of chemicals.
  • Familiarity with all Tri‑Armor line operating parameters.
  • Familiarity with all test instruments, their proper use and maintenance.
  • Competent writing skills; able to document processes logically and coherently; able to communicate professionally via memos or email.
  • Oral communication skills; able to communicate professionally with BAC customers and co‑workers.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the plant IPI process and CAP program.
  • Competent in math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractional computations, and conversion of fractions to decimals.
  • Good overall knowledge of the variety of BAC products.
  • Ability to operate JIB cranes; certified.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and shop paperwork.
  • Flexible and able to adapt quickly to change.
  • Knowledge of knock-downs, packing and crating procedures.
  • Able to flex to other assembly lines with minimal training and supervision.
  • Knowledge of elementary and intermediate Lean principles: 5S, Kanban, one-piece flow, and basic continuous improvement techniques.
  • Familiarity with relevant procedures, policies, and standard work instructions for the area.
  • Competence in BAC quality procedures and processes for addressing quality issues.
  • Computer skills: locating relevant instructions and forms on the LAN or other databases.
Working Conditions

The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs. Standing is expected up to 80 % of the time. Additional activities include walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Fine-hand manipulation and hand‑eye coordination are required. Exposures include elevated noise levels, temperature fluctuations, and intermittent weather exposure in and around the yard and dock areas. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week.

Some weekend overtime is expected. Working temperatures include wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
