School Nurse – Floating (PreK – Grade 12) – TEMPORARY for the 2025‑2026 School Year (Job )
Position Purpose- To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, and management to students in order to minimize absences due to illness, maximize educational opportunities, and create a healthy school climate.
- Works collaboratively with health care providers, students, parents, school district staff, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining a comprehensive school health program.
- Collects and reports health status data for compliance with state immunization regulations and Board policies.
- Conducts school immunization programs, physical examinations, and sight/hearing testing.
- Performs nursing assessments for ill or injured students; applies evidence‑based first aid, nursing care, and facilitates referrals.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care and adjusts plans as necessary.
- Implements Board policy regarding exclusion and readmission for infectious or contagious diseases.
- Maintains accurate records and documentation in compliance with state and federal law.
- Develops individual health care plans with nursing diagnoses and interventions; incorporates these into IEPs or 504 Plans.
- Intervenes per care plan to promote, maintain, or restore health and aid in rehabilitation.
- Serves as a healthcare professional on school teams (e.g., Crisis Team, PPT, Section 504).
- Provides guidance, counseling, and health education to students, parents, and staff as needed.
- Reports to parents, district personnel, physicians, and clinics to meet students’ health needs.
- Contributes to nursing and school health through practice innovations and research.
- Provides medical assessment to district employees and health education to students on request.
- Notifies appropriate agencies or personnel of student injuries or illnesses per Board policy.
- Consults with parents, students, and staff to interpret assessments.
- Complies with all HIPAA rules.
- Follows district procedures when nursing coverage is insufficient.
- Identifies needed health accommodations for students in the Seaford Comprehensive Program.
- Outlines care plans, provides nursing services, and evaluates IEP/504 health components for students in that program.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisors or administrators.
- Medical equipment such as blood glucose monitor, stethoscope, thermometer, sphygmomanometer.
- Personal computer.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, nutrition, and related areas.
- Ability to diagnose and provide care for ill or injured students.
- Ability to convey appropriate medical information to staff and professionals.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations as needed.
- Proficiency in personal computers and software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse group including students with special needs.
- Ability to follow oral and written orders and coordinate work with principals, teachers, and others.
- Ability to describe school health services, issues, and concerns orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students and staff.
- Adhere to all professional nursing safety standards, federal and state law, and OSHA regulations.
- Frequent travel between schools may be required.
- Work in a standard school building environment.
- Exposure to body secretions, blood‑borne pathogens, medication, chemicals, illnesses, and diseases.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
- Hold and maintain a current Registered Nurse license, licensed by the Delaware Board of Nursing.
- Hold and maintain valid certifications in CPR and AED.
- Complete 90 clock‑hour training within two school years of hire (approved by the Department).
- Complete a minimum of three (3) years of supervised clinical nursing experience.
