5B at the Bayhealth Sussex campus is a 24 bed Progressive Care Unit. The unit is equipped with 5 ICU headboards. This unit participates in Nurse Governance, Nurse Residency and has excellent teamwork and leadership. 5B was recently awarded the AACN Silver level Beacon Award; this prestigious national award recognizes hospital units that demonstrate exceptional patient outcomes, healthy work environment and sustained commitment to evidence‑based nursing practice.

The Nursing Assistant position involves delivering clinical nursing services to patients.

The Nursing Assistant functions under the supervision of a licensed nurse or therapist, providing care that does not require the judgment and skills of a licensed professional. After competency verification, the nursing assistant may deliver patient care services to the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. The care may include, but is not limited to, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulating, transferring, feeding, observing, and reporting the general well‑being of the person(s) to whom they are providing care.

Coordinates clerical duties of a diverse and confidential nature to maintain the efficiency of patient care areas.

Department team members are authorized to have limited access to secured medication rooms to perform duties and responsibilities as defined in this job description. Any staff member requiring limited access to secured medication rooms must have a fully completed and signed Medication Security Agreement for Non‑Licensed Personnel form on file and available upon request.

Responsibilities
  • Follow nursing assistant plan of care established by the Registered Nurse within a specified timeframe; including, but not limited to, mouth care, bathing, AM and PM care, assistance with ambulation, transfers to chair and/or bed, taking and documenting vital signs, and recording accurate intake and output. Document all patient care delivered according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform duties with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned units.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Communicate relevant patient information to a professional nurse within an appropriate time based on the level of urgency. Report problems immediately to a professional nurse.
  • Answer intercom or call lights in a timely, courteous manner, with appropriate communication to the patient and/or professional nurse.
  • Perform patient care based on established guidelines for diagnostic and therapeutic exams; i.e., NPO for labs or x-rays, OR, diet changes related to tests, enema‑related tests.
  • Perform safety and suicide precaution sitter duties as assigned.
  • Assist other members of the nursing team and/or ancillary departments as requested.
