About the Role

We are looking for experienced 9-1-1 Dispatchers who can step in and quickly make a difference for our community. If you have experience in an emergency communications center handling 9-1-1 and police, fire, and/or EMS dispatch, we would love to talk to you.

Pay

Pay is commensurate with experience.

  • 1+ Years = $31.02 an hour
  • 2+ Years = $32.43 an hour
  • 3+ Years = $33.88 an hour
  • 4+ Years = $36.42 an hour
Benefits

Delaware offers a great atmosphere and benefits. In addition to advanced step placement for pay, prior public service credit allows for a higher vacation earning placement. A shift differential of $1.00 per hour is paid for second and third shift hours.

Job Location

DELCOMM is the primary public safety answering point for Delaware County, answering all landline, voice-over-internet, and wireless 9-1-1 calls placed in the County. We dispatch for thirteen fire departments, Delaware County EMS, Delaware County EMA, Powell Police Department, and Delaware City Police Department.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to requests for service via telephone and radio, employing telephone interviewing techniques and radio transmissions.
  • Process telephone calls, analyze situations rapidly and accurately, prioritize, make referrals, and initiate the proper response promptly.
  • Maintain caller, responder, and public safety awareness.
  • Report directly to a Tour Commander.
  • Work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Conduct required administrative duties such as typing, word processing, and database maintenance.
Essential Functions
  • Provide emergency first responder communications link between the public and public safety entities.
  • Analyze situations rapidly and accurately, determine effective courses of action, complete required paperwork, and maintain detailed records of action.
  • Provide standardized emergency telephone procedures to callers using an automated pre-arrival telephone instruction system.
  • Process radio communications for public safety responders and maintain detailed records of such traffic.
  • Assist public safety entities in disaster response and preparedness.
  • Maintain thorough working knowledge of all operational and administrative rules, regulations, codes, laws, policies, and procedures that govern duties within the Center.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with emergency response personnel.
  • Aid management by recommending operational procedures to the supervisor.
  • Identify and report equipment problems and outages to the supervisor.
  • Support the Database Technician in maintaining electronic and manual databases.
  • Drive to the Emergency Operations Center, backup Communications Center, the Communications Center, or alternate location during an emergency recall as defined by Center policy.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Attend various training sessions, video conferences, and workshops.
  • Hold all aspects of the job confidential.
  • Work overtime and outside of typical work schedule/business hours as required.
Qualifications

Individual must have a high school diploma or GED, familiarity with computers and basic computer applications, and keyboarding experience. Within one year of hire, the individual must successfully complete and maintain certification in CPR/AED, all current APCO required disciplines, NIMS certifications, and any other required standards. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

Shifts
  • First Shift – 6:00am to 2:00pm
  • Second Shift – 2:00pm to 10:00pm
  • Third Shift – 10:00pm to 6:00am
Training Process
  • Phase 1 – Classroom Training
  • Phase 2 – Call taking in the 911 center
  • Phase 3 – Fire Dispatching
  • Phase 4 – Law Enforcement Dispatching
  • Phase 5 – Independent/Evaluation Only
Requirements for Success

The nature of our work involves listening to phone and radio communications to capture critical information. Telecommunicators must be able to maintain good working relationships with their coworkers in a close environment. The job is demanding, stressful, and intense, requiring a strong sense of service and resilience.
