Special Education Teacher - Seaford Comprehensive Program (18-22 Year Old Program - High School)
Educating children, aged 18-22 years old, who are diagnosed with a number of physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
Essential Job Functions- Guides students to learn vocational and independent living skills and work-based learning.
- Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
- Administers classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
- Prepares classroom activities and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
- Maintains record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
- Monitors classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
- Plans and monitors work-based learning opportunities for students.
- Accompanies students on field trips.
- Contacts parents to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
- Monitors students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement of IEP objectives, etc.
- Monitors students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
- Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
- Maintains health and safety of orthopedically handicapped and medically fragile students by being aware of environment and the potential hazards of each child’s actions.
- Assists students with personal hygiene; washes hands and faces; monitors individual toilet schedules; toilets students and changes diapers and clothing as needed.
- Operates a variety of medical equipment including oral suctioning, gastronomy and orthopedic equipment.
- Assists students with severe eating problems and monitors self-feeding students as directed by a teacher; uses gastronomy and suctioning equipment and takes appropriate action when students have difficulty while eating.
- Monitors and controls student behavior in accordance with established guidelines.
- Attends periodic and special training and in-services related to medical interventions and the instructional program.
- Assists students with braces and wheelchairs and other orthopedic equipment; positions and repositions students as needed.
- Assists students with selected learning activities; assists students individually and in small group settings; opens and closes books, removes and adds papers in notebooks.
- Assists students getting on and off bus, including students in wheelchairs; accompanies medically fragile students on the bus and on field trips as assigned.
- Responds to students’ emergencies.
- Assists in toileting and feeding students with special needs.
- Learns and performs medical intervention techniques including gastronomy feeding, catheterization and oral suctioning.
- First Aid/CPR.
- Assists in lifting students and equipment including fully grown students.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other district office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
- Uses standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers.
- Uses medical devices as needed by students.
Travel between schools, or between schools and offices, may be required for certain positions.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiating instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
