Road Design Engineer

Employee is responsible for the design and plan preparation of basic to moderately complex roads, bridges, culverts and intersections and for management and oversight of consulting engineers performing work for the Agency. Duties also include analyzing a variety of transportation and engineering studies, reviewing and approving various plan submissions and performing drainage and hydrology calculations. Employee reports to the Deputy Design Engineer.

Job Requirements

Equipment:
Employee operates the following equipment: computer and related software, printer, plotter, calculator, and any other tools, equipment and electronic devices necessary to complete job duties.

Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction;
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and drawings;
  • Ability to accurately write and interpret legal descriptions of property under direction of a registered land surveyor;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Thorough knowledge of road construction practices and maintenance operations, as they relate to the job duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles, and practices, as they relate to the job duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of hydraulics and hydrology;
  • Thorough knowledge of ODOT Construction and Materials Specification Manual;
  • Thorough knowledge of ODOT Location and Design Manual;
  • Thorough knowledge of Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD) regulations and procedures as they relate to the job duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of Standard Bridge Drawings;
  • Thorough knowledge of highway construction specifications and standards;
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ohio Department of Transportation's Bridge Design Manual;
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories, practices and procedures in civil engineering, hydrology, hydraulics and construction as they relate to job duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of Agency policies and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of material and vendor product specialization, and geometric design principles and the ability to interpret and apply them to the job duties;
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computers, CADD and GIS software programs and pertinent third-party software and the ability to use and operate them on the job.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra and the ability to apply them to the job duties as needed.

Job Standards:
Completion of four years of post secondary education resulting in a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering field plus certification of registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio. Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience. Employee must have additional training and experience in all aspects of geometric design of highways and related structures, CADD / GIS, drafting, and surveying.

Employee must possess a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Driver's License and an acceptable driving record.

Responsibility

Work may be reviewed by supervisor to determine cost, feasibility, technical accuracy adherence to standards and completeness. Employee works under general supervision and applies organizational policies, rules, guidelines and State/County standards/specifications as they relate to activities of the work assignment. Employee is required to follow established rules and standards and to use a variety of technical information, knowledge language and complex calculations to complete work assignments.

Employee works independently and must be able to adapt appropriate standards and practices to site specific layout and design projects in order to create the safest design. Employee consults with supervisor throughout the work process concerning unusual or unique circumstances.

Errors in design decisions can result in inaccurate costing of a project, unsafe infrastructure, exposure to litigation, waste of resources and may cause injury or death.

Employee interacts with co-workers, employees in the department, representatives of private and other public entities, and the general public while carrying out the assigned duties.…
