Position: BEHAVIORAL HEALTH - PEER COACH at Beebe Healthcare Delaware, OH

Overview

The Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical services designed to support patients in establishing and sustaining recovery from high-risk substance use disorders. Working collaboratively as part of the hospital care team, the coach offers peer support, encouragement, and motivation to help patients explore behavior change related to substance use and engage in recovery-oriented services. The role includes direct interventions with patients during hospitalization and within the community to facilitate access to treatment programs, recovery resources, and supportive services.

The Peer Recovery Coach will engage with patients in the Emergency Department, assigned inpatient units, and through community outreach efforts following hospital discharge to promote continuity of care and reduce barriers to recovery.

Responsibilities
  • Works with the Behavioral Health nursing team to identify patients’ history of substance abuse disorder treatment, motivation to change behavior, and other needs for community support services.
  • Identifies patients’ readiness to change and uses motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills.
  • Collaborates with hospital team members to identify community support services aligned with the patient plan.
  • Works with other health providers and community resources collaboratively to support patient needs.
  • Assists patients and families with understanding how to utilize community services.
  • Reduces barriers for patients to access care, including coordinating services such as securing appointments and transportation.
  • Acts as a peer support throughout hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate, to facilitate attainment of goals.
  • Provides family members with recovery support materials.
  • Assists patients in setting personal recovery goals.
  • Provides education on overdose risks and ensures patients and significant others have naloxone and are trained to use it.
  • Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is grant funded and is contingent upon continued grant funding availability. Employment may be limited to the duration and terms of the grant award.

Qualifications
  • Peer in recovery for at least 18 months.
  • BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Mental Health First Aid course within 6 months of hire.
  • Peer certification within 2 years of hire.
Competencies and Skills
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to keep confidential information regarding patients and team members.
  • Ability to withstand crisis situations.
  • Customer service skills for patients, team members, and visitors.
Education

High school graduate or equivalent.

Compensation

Entry: USD $18.00 per hour

Maximum: USD $27.90 per hour
