Job Description Summary
Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) position in a 4‑OR suite dynamic operating room setting. The OR serves patients with complex acuity and requires weekend, weekday, and holiday on‑call coverage. The RNFA works under the direction and direct supervision of the surgeon to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Responsibilities and Duties- Preoperative patient management (15%): perform nursing assessments, preoperative evaluations and communicate plan of care with the healthcare team.
- Postoperative patient management (15%): participate in postoperative rounds and discharge planning with the team.
- Intraoperative performance (70%): work under the direction and direct supervision of the surgeon during surgery.
- Assist with closure of body planes, wound layers, subcutaneous, and skin closures.
- Inject local anesthetic.
- Desiccate tissue.
- Provide hemostasis.
- Place laparoscopic trocars.
- Coordinate camera or robotic arm and instrument changes during endoscopic surgery.
- Provide exposure for the surgeon and visualization of the operative site.
- Activate cautery and operate the electrosurgical unit.
- Perform specialized tissue handling, dissection, or cutting techniques (e.g., trocar placement, preparation of allografts, saphenous vein harvesting).
- The RNFA cannot be the sole provider in the room during the surgical timeout.
- The RNFA cannot perform the initial incision.
- The RNFA cannot mark the surgical site.
- The RNFA cannot independently write orders.
- The RNFA cannot be involved in any other role or function during the surgical procedure (scrub or circulator).
- Associate’s Degree (Required).
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
- Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR).
- Completion of an RNFA program that meets AORN recommended education standards.
- Minimum two years experience as an operating room nurse in both circulator and scrub roles.
Day shift, 40 hours per week.
