Job Summary

Incumbent is a sworn and certified peace officer who performs a variety of duties related to the protection of life, limb, and property. The incumbent reports to the shift sergeant and may function as shift sergeant in his or her absence.

Completion of secondary education or equivalent and certification from the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council is required. The incumbent must properly administer first aid/CPR, hold a valid Ohio driver’s license, and maintain a clean criminal record.

Responsibilities
  • Preserve the peace and enforce the laws of the state of Ohio.
  • Protect the life and property of citizens as a sworn peace officer of Delaware County.
  • Patrol assigned areas and respond to criminal and civil calls as dispatched.
  • Apprehend violators of the law, conduct vacant house and business checks, control traffic, and transport prisoners.
  • Provide county court and county building security as assigned.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle and other equipment and prepare accurate reports.
  • Investigate criminal activity, including misdemeanors, felonies, and traffic offenses.
  • Evaluate reported felony and misdemeanor offenses and take statements from suspects, victims, and witnesses.
  • Contact complainants and witnesses in follow‑up investigations, interrogate suspects, and make arrests.
  • Provide surveillance, prepare criminal case files, and develop probable cause for warrants.
  • Appear in court as a witness and represent the Sheriff’s Office in the community.
  • Organize community meetings, crime‑prevention programs, and resolve problems with residents and community management.
  • Speak to community groups, schools, and other organizations on law‑enforcement issues and educate the public.
  • Ensure proper delivery of legal notices, execute warrants, serve summons, handle attachments, and coordinate process service.
  • Maintain records of time, place, and warrant status; prepare court reports; submit daily activity reports to supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Secondary education or equivalent and Ohio Peace Officers Training Council certification.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and clean criminal record.
  • Ability to administer first aid/CPR.
  • Quick response to potentially threatening situations.

  • Hire: $35.02
  • 1 Year: $39.41
  • 3 Years: $44.13
  • 5 Years: $48.14

Application Process

The application process requires two steps. All steps must be completed for an applicant to be considered for an interview.

Step 2: Attend physical fitness testing. Information on testing will be sent via email.

A required part of the interview process is a physical abilities test that includes push‑ups and sit‑ups timed for one minute and a 1.5‑mile run based on OPOTC age and gender standards.

Successful completion of physical testing is required for interview eligibility, but it does not guarantee an interview invitation.

NOTE:

Candidates who have previously applied must wait at least one year from their most recent interview to be eligible for re‑interview.
