Job Description

Substitute Bus/Trip Driver

Work as little or as much as you’d like. Will train.

Must be able to take weekend/evening field trips.

Step 0 = $21.66

Qualifications
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must have the physical capability to perform a daily pre‑trip inspection as mandated.
  • Must be physically able to wear a seat belt.
  • Be physically qualified as determined by an annual physical examination.
  • Meet the criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education, Form T‑8.
  • Complete pre‑service and in‑service training per Rule 3301‑83‑10 of the Administrative Code.
  • Hold a current commercial driver’s license.
  • Demonstrate the ability to cope with stressful situations related to all students, including students with disabilities.
  • Possess or upgrade skills through formal and/or in‑service training related to transportation of students, including those with disabilities.
  • Maintain a satisfactory work history and driving record as verified through professional references and criminal background checks.
  • Understand the role of pupil transportation in the educational program and meet all physical, mental, and moral requirements set by state laws and the local Board of Education.
  • Pass pre‑employment drug screen and all subsequent drug and alcohol screens required under Ohio law.
Reporting

Reports to: Transportation Coordinator

Supervises: Children who are passengers on the bus

Position goal: To provide safe and efficient transportation of students.

Employment Terms

Number of school days per year: 178 plus 6 paid holidays, plus the opening day meeting.

Evaluation

Performance evaluated by: Transportation Coordinator.

Drivers evaluated once a year prior to acquiring a continuing contract. Then annually every three years. Additional evaluations may be conducted if deemed necessary.

Job Responsibilities
  • Cleans the bus and acquires necessary repairs and service as needed.
  • Completes mandated pre‑trip inspection prior to driving the bus each day.
  • Maintains compliance with all Ohio laws, ODE, and district policies and procedures related to mandatory random, reasonable‑cause, and post‑accident drug/alcohol testing.
  • Obeys all Ohio and local traffic laws, ODE, and district policies.
  • Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Keeps to assigned schedule and route.
  • Directly supervises students on the bus at all times, staying present and alert to student behavior.
  • Maintains firm, fair, and consistent discipline when students are on the bus.
  • Enforces school bus regulations as outlined in the handbook and bus rules document.
  • Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority in writing.
  • Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops.
  • Transports only authorized students.
  • Completes and turns in route timing sheets, timesheets, and other required reports/forms.
  • Notifies the proper authorities in case of mechanical failure or delay in arrival.
  • Notifies proper authorities in the event of hazardous road conditions.
  • Reports all accidents and completes required accident reports within 24 hours.
  • Attends all safety workshops and meetings as required by district administration.
  • Keeps the bus fueled at all times, supervises fueling activity, and reports spills to the head mechanic immediately.
  • Uses proper grammar and correct spelling on disciplinary forms and other reports.
  • Uses the bus radio professionally and only for school/safety related business.
  • Reports all on‑duty and off‑duty traffic violations to the supervisor before returning to work.
  • Maintains mature and proper behavior while on duty and on school property.
  • Must carry a CDL at all times when on duty, according to Ohio law.
  • Follows Ohio law and district policy regarding the use of cell phones and other electronic devices; may not be used while students are present on the bus, whether moving or stationary.
  • Ids the bus only as needed; 5 minutes to warm up in the morning, extendable to 10 minutes when temperature is below 32°F.
