Position Overview
Full Time Bus Driver. Must be able to take weekend/evening field trips. 6 Hours per day route pay guaranteed. Qualifies for Medical/Dental/Vision/Life. Step 0 (starting salary) $22.53/hr.
Qualifications- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must have the physical capability to perform a daily pre‑trip inspection as mandated.
- Must be physically able to wear a seat belt.
- Be physically qualified as determined by an annual physical examination.
- Complete pre‑service and in‑service training per Rule 3301‑83‑10, etc.
- Hold a current commercial driver's license or be willing to obtain one (training provided).
- Demonstrate ability to handle stressful situations with students, including students with disabilities.
- Possess or improve skills through formal/in-service training related to transportation of students, including those with disabilities.
- Maintain satisfactory work history and driving record, verified through references, criminal record check, etc.
- Understand the role of pupil transportation in the educational program and meet all physical, mental, moral requirements set by state laws.
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen and other required screens under Ohio law.
- Reports to:
Transportation Coordinator. - Supplies:
Supervises children who are passengers on the bus. - POSITION GOAL:
To provide safe and efficient transportation of students.
The total number of days school is in session during a school year is 178 plus 6 paid holidays, plus the opening day meeting.
Evaluation- Performance evaluated by Transportation Coordinator.
- Drivers evaluated once a year prior to acquiring a Continuing Contract; subsequently every 3 years.
- Cleans the bus and obtains necessary repairs/service as needed.
- Completes mandated pre‑trip inspection each day.
- Is compliant with all Ohio laws, ODE, and district policies related to drug/alcohol testing.
- Obeys all Ohio and local traffic laws, ODE and district policies.
- Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
- Keeps to assigned schedule and route.
- Directly supervises students on bus at all times, being present and alert to student behavior.
- Maintains firm, fair and consistent discipline.
- Enforces school bus regulations as outlined in handbook and bus rules document.
- Reports undisciplined students to proper authority in writing.
- Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops.
- Transports only authorized students.
- Completes and turns in route timing sheets, timesheets and other reports/forms as required.
- Notifies proper authorities in case of mechanical failure or delay in arrival.
- Notifies proper authority in event of hazardous road conditions.
- Reports all accidents and completes required accident reports within 24 hours.
- Attends all safety workshops and meetings as required by district administration.
- Keeps bus fueled at all times; uses established fueling procedures; supervises fueling activity, reports spills to head mechanic.
- Uses proper grammar and correct spelling in using disciplinary forms and other reports.
- Uses bus radio professionally and only for school/safety related business.
- Reports all on‑duty/off‑duty traffic violations to supervisor before returning to work.
- Maintains mature and proper behavior while on duty and on school property.
- Must carry CDL at all times when on duty, according to Ohio law.
- Follows Ohio law and district policy in regard to use of cell phones and other electronic devices (may not be used at any time while students are present on the bus).
- Idles bus only as needed; 5 minutes to warm up in the morning, may be extended to 10 minutes when temperature is below 32.
- Shuts bus engine off when parked on school property for 3 minutes or more, except for bus using a handicapped lift. Does not restart until all students have boarded.
- Maintains well‑groomed appearance, including shoes.
- Displays a positive and friendly attitude.
- Is punctual and dependable.
- Shows an interest in the job.
- Remains flexible at all times and remains calm when under stress.
- Demonstrates ability to make sound decisions.
- Maintains a good attendance record.
- Follows district and departmental policies for requesting days/time off.
