Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Assist with construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical substations and switchyards.
- Work in substations with voltages from 15 kV to 500 kV.
- Assist with below‑grade and above‑grade conduit or raceway installation.
- Assist with below‑grade and above‑grade grounding installation.
- Assist with assembly and installation of steel structures.
- Assist with installation of aluminum bus and strain bus.
- Assist with installation and maintenance of high‑voltage circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage transformers, potential transformers, and capacitor banks.
- Install secondary wiring, control enclosure work and relay panel installations.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Receive training in book/classroom skills and on‑the‑job skills and continue to pass ongoing training to progress to higher skill levels.
- Follow all safety guidelines as part of training.
- Work around hazardous equipment.
- Work around excessive noise from machines, jackhammers and other equipment, using proper hearing protection.
- Work at varying heights, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces with proper personal protective equipment.
- Facilitate the use of PPE and maintain attention during dangerous tasks.
- Pull, push, bend, stoop and kneel frequently, lift up to 50 pounds, and work long hours including overtime on holidays and weekends.

- Understand basic operations of electrical utility transmission & distribution systems.
- Demonstrate skills, practical experience and/or formal training equivalent to 13‑24 months of the Utility Lines Construction Substation Technician Apprenticeship Program.
- Understand electrical hazards associated with transmission and distribution voltage substation construction.
- Understand safe work practices and clearances; identify potential hazards for all employees.
- Be able to walk, climb, and work from ladders or at various heights on uneven and slippery surfaces, performing mentally/physically demanding work.
- Be able to lift, move and maneuver heavy weights up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Be able to wear PPE as necessary.
- Maintain attention during dangerous tasks.
- Have endurance to perform duties throughout a standard ten‑hour day.
- Be available for long hours, overtime during holidays, emergencies, and weekends.
- Hold a valid driver’s license; CDL preferred.
- Have reliable transportation to and from the work location.
- Pass a pre‑employment drug screen, background check and motor vehicle record check.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of work experience in substation construction.
- CDL required.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home.
- Travel out of state for emergency storm work.
