General Statement of Duties

The Social Service Assistant will report to the Program Manager of the locality within which they are employed and work to provide a trauma-informed, safe and stimulating environment for clients. They will be expected to work within the policies and procedures of Family & Community Services and work toward the maintenance of excellent service standards and professional practices.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assist in the efficient running of the facility and its therapeutic programming and other general duties associated.
  • Utilize trauma‑informed care to assist clients upon shelter entrance with required paperwork, and provide ongoing support throughout their shelter stay by offering supplemental case management and aiding in communication and coordination with various agencies to secure appointments and resources.
  • Provide the level of support necessary to ensure all clients experience an improved quality of life while in our shelters.
  • Use a strength‑based approach to help clients work toward their goals of obtaining independent living.
  • Accompany clients to appointments, as needed.
  • Organize, plan and lead voluntary group activities for clients in shelter to promote positive interactions and group work (e.g., affirmation boards, book club, yoga, etc.) when time allows.
  • Complete daily administrative duties such as answering phone, directing inbound calls, keeping the office clean and organized, tracking supply lists and facility needs, completing check requests and tracking therapeutic programming attendance of clients.
  • Maintain facility documents and records and ensure all requirements to operate a facility are being met, such as conducting fire drills, monitoring kitchen temperatures, and other facility needs.
  • Prepare rooms and meals (as needed) for clients.
  • Work with team members to foster a positive working environment.
  • Promote anti‑discriminatory practice ensuring that no resident is discriminated against on the grounds of race, class, gender, religious beliefs, disability, or sexual orientation.
  • Attend staff meetings and training courses as required by management.
  • Report to work on time for all assigned shifts.
  • Comply with agency policies and procedures, COA regulations, federal and state requirements, and educational/certification/registry requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to utilize the trauma‑informed care model to provide open communication, fair and equitable treatment, and display care and compassion.
  • Excellent in‑person, phone, email, and written communication skills for team members and clients, even in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of community services.
  • Must possess Microsoft Word skills.
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License and ability to meet agency requirements for driving insurability.
  • Must be able to meet agency requirements for criminal background check (Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation).
  • Must have reliable transportation and a phone.
Minimum Education al/Licensure Requirements

High School Diploma or GED preferred. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.

Minimum Experience Requirements

Experience working in crisis intervention preferred.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and move at least 20 pounds.
