PhD Position:
Effect of Tramp Elements on Hot Rolled Microstructures in Steels
The steel industry is transitioning to hydrogen‑based DRI and EAF routes, increasing the use of scrap metal. Tramp elements such as Cu, Sn and Ni can adversely affect steel microstructure and mechanical properties. This PhD project investigates their impact on a dual‑phase automotive steel during hot rolling, cold rolling and annealing, with the goal of developing strategies to mitigate negative effects and support circularity in steel production.
As a PhD researcher you will conduct experimental work, advanced microstructural analysis and mechanical testing at TU Delft in collaboration with Tata Steel Netherlands. You will contribute to the academic community through discussions, co‑supervision of students and guest lectures.
Responsibilities- Investigate the effect of tramp elements on steel microstructure and performance.
- Perform microstructural characterization and mechanical testing.
- Develop process strategies to mitigate negative effects.
- Publish findings and present at conferences.
- Co‑supervise students and give guest lectures.
- Master’s degree in materials science, solid‑state physics, materials engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience in microstructural characterization.
- Strong problem‑solving, critical and creative thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills.
- Motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary academic‑industrial team.
