Special Education Associates work under the direction of special education teachers, administrators, and related service providers to support students in both general education and special education settings. Associates play an important role in creating a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment while assisting students with academic tasks, social skills development, behavioral support, and daily routines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide one-on-one and small-group instructional support to students receiving special education services.
- Assist students in achieving goals outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Support classroom instruction by reinforcing lessons, adapting materials, and facilitating student engagement.
- Monitor student progress and communicate observations to teachers and special education staff.
- Assist with behavior management plans and implement positive behavioral supports.
- Help students develop social, communication, organizational, and life skills.
- Support students during transitions between classrooms, lunch, recess, and school activities.
- Assist with supervision and ensure student safety throughout the school day.
- Provide physical assistance to students when necessary, including mobility support, positioning, and personal care needs.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, therapists, support staff, and families.
- Participate in required meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support student success and district goals.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience working with children or individuals with disabilities is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families.
- Strong interpersonal skills, patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also demonstrating initiative.
- Commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
