Job DescriptionThis is technical work analyzing drinking water for organic and inorganic contaminants. This position is fully responsible for organic and inorganic analyses and assisting lab analysts in their work. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Environmental Laboratory Manager.
EssentialJob Duties
- Collect water samples.
- Analyze organics and in organics.
- Prepare solutions and conduct special tests.
- Maintain accurate reports and records.
- Conduct laboratory correspondence related to particular area of work.
- Run routine and special analyses and tests and operate specialized equipment, including Inductively Coupled Plasma/Atomic Absorption and Gas Chromatography/Ion Chromatography.
- Operate within EPA, HRS quality control guidelines.
- Answer questions of a technical nature.
- Back‑up and assist laboratory analyst in their work (including Field Sampling, Wet‑Chemistry, and Microbiology) as needed.
- Foster positive employee relations and employee morale on a City‑wide basis.
- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Microbiology or a related field.
- Two (2) years’ laboratory experience.
- Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of general analytical techniques such as ion chromatography, wet‑chemistry, and microbiology.
- Additional knowledge of specialized techniques such as ICP/AA and GC is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize LIMs system, personal computer and office software such as MS Word, MS Excel and electronic mail.
Knowledge of all laboratory methods and procedures including field sampling. Knowledge of safety regulations. Knowledge of quality control programs. Knowledge of LIMs and various required programs. Ability to work rotating shifts. Ability to perform calculations for correct solution concentrations and other calculations related to quality control. Ability to conduct complex laboratory investigations and experiments. Skill in the operation and maintenance of various testing equipment such as Ion Chromatography, Analytical Balances, Pipetting devices, and UV‑VIS Spectrophotometer.
Additional skill in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment such as ICP/AA and GC/LC, and any high‑end analytical instrumentation is preferred. Ability to manage and prioritize routine, specialized and complex assignments and problems utilizing knowledge acquired through prior education, training, and experience. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment.
