Minimum Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of experience in apiculture, environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; agriculture; or engineering.
  • An associate degree (2 years) from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Class E driver license.
  • Graduates using education obtained in the United States must provide verification of the applicable degree. Must submit a credential evaluation if the degree was earned outside the United States.
Additional Requirements
  • MUST obtain fruit fly certification within six months of appointment and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting, as a condition of employment.
Job Duties
  • Supports fruit fly detection activities by building, servicing, and placing traps.
  • Conducts plant pest detection surveys in agricultural and residential environs and places fruit fly detection devices in accordance with the Florida Fruit Fly Detection Manual.
  • Conducts field diagnostic tasks using approved sampling methods to collect laboratory samples and initiates regulatory action upon diagnosis.
  • Inspects plant material and high‑risk commodities for pests, and monitors plants grown under federal post‑entry quarantine regulations.
  • Assists or participates in special programs such as plant pest eradication projects, exotic pest surveys, and protocols, which may require travel above two weeks and unusual working hours.
  • Resolves consumer complaints, attends meetings and workshops, presents to the public, maintains proper records, and submits timely reports.
  • Performs related work as directed by management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of techniques used in inspecting plants or other agricultural products.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory treatments of plants and pesticide labeling restrictions.
  • Ability to detect plant pests.
  • Ability to compile, organize, and analyze data and make recommendations.
  • Ability to interpret rules and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work in extreme hot, cold, or humid temperature environments.
  • Ability to lift and transport 25 pounds.
  • Ability to conduct inspections in natural and cultivated areas with uneven ground.
  • Ability to operate a computer to access and retrieve electronic information.
