The Senior Safety & Training Coordinator reports to the Project Manager, and the primary role is to ensure training and safety procedures are compliant to the national, corporate and legislative standards and the implementation of a skills base program to the Mining Department while ensuring a safe, productive operation.

Duties include:
  • Develop and maintain procedural systems, processes and training for the underground mining operations in accordance with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.

Ensure personnel are adequately inducted and trained in their work area and are aware of all workplace rules and critical procedures applying at site.

Actively contribute to new initiatives and implement change as directed by the Project Manager and the site management team.

Actively promote, monitor and enforce compliance of personnel with safe work practices.

Facilitate incident investigations to establish root cause of incidents and determine corrective actions.

Facilitate and participate in the Formal Risk Assessment process.

Ensure regular inspections of underground working areas, stockpiles, waste dumps, etc. to ensure safe operations.

Ensure regular task observations are undertaken to ensure compliance of operators with procedure and policy.

Inspect and manage emergency equipment and systems in the underground environment.

Host daily safety meetings for underground mining when required.

Ensure an accurate and full account of all training, inductions and assessments conducted is maintained.

Ensure an accurate and full account of all standard operating procedures, emergency procedures and plans and Job Hazard Analysis’ are maintained.

Develop a culture of high performance and behaviors that are consistent with agreed values.

Build and mentor the underground safety team ensuring performance objectives and measures are developed and assessed with focus on high technical standards and continuous improvement.

Develop a succession plan for roles within the team.

Ensure all safety related activities are undertaken in accordance with Company policy and MSHA requirements including Hazard ’s, pre-start checks, pre-start meetings, and incident reporting.

Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas.

Ensure effective handover to cross shift or delegate as required.

Prepare upgrade criteria for each non-exempt job classification, as well as any needed revisions, for manager’s approval.

Provide and monitor training opportunities in an objective process; ensure that training opportunities are made available fairly, consistently and in a manner free from discriminatory bias.

Review employees’ requests/applications for training based on objective evidence related to job performance, abilities and interest.

Document employees’ readiness to train for tasks, noting any operational reasons related to the availability and scheduling of requested training.

Maintain training records of employees in the department. Monitor training register and logging formal training as it occurs.

Participate in the review of any appeals filed by employees concerning training opportunities.

Other duties as required.

Qualifications Required
  • Blue Card certified (Underground).
  • Current Driver’s License.
Desired Experience & Competencies

Experience in the development of policies, procedures, competencies, and risk assessments.

Practical experience in the interpretation and application of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.

Experience in the supervision of employees.

Experience working in a mechanized hard-rock underground mine.

Experience in incident investigation and reporting.

Familiarity with INX database modules such as InTuition, InFlight and InControl.

Demonstrated experience in competency-based training and assessment methods and delivery of training materials to crews.

Auditing or inspection experience.

Good skills in spreadsheet, presentation, word processing and database applications.

Ability to communicate effectively across all levels.

Report writing and presentation skills.

Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.

Be able to pass a background check and post offer physical.

The details:

Working a 21 day on, 21 day off rotating schedule up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
