Overview
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 1/2/3 positions in Delta Junction, Alaska. The position is open to all applicants.
ResponsibilitiesBeginning at the Flex 1 Level, the technician will develop a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques, practices, and terminology. The role involves performing basic, well‑defined tasks under specific instruction on WFR Tech 1. As technicians progress to WFR Tech 2 and 3, they will assume increased responsibilities and duties related to fire operations, prevention, and protection.
Working EnvironmentThis position is located at 2058 Richardson Hwy. The technician must be able to think clearly and act decisively during prolonged and/or multiple incidents under stressful conditions when life and property are threatened. The role requires a NIMMS Incident Command System Red Card, an arduous level work‑capacity rating, and the ability to work up to sixteen hours per day for extended periods during the fire season.
Travel both in and out of state for fire suppression assignments, stand‑by or recall status, and potential assignment to hazardous conditions may be required.
- Fire Management: Knowledge of fire behavior, ecology, prescribed fire methods, detection, prevention, suppression strategies, and integration with natural resource management.
- Adaptability: Adjusts planned work by gathering relevant information and applying critical thinking to address multiple demands in a changing environment.

Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. - Attention to Detail: Performs work thoroughly and conscientiously attends to detail.
- Analytical Thinking / Problem Solving: Applies a logical, systematic approach to address problems or opportunities, calling on knowledge, experience, and resources as necessary.
- At least eighteen years of age.
- Minimum of six months of trainee or entry‑level wildland fire fighting or forestry field experience for WFR Tech 2; twelve months of field experience, including at least six months at the developmental level, for WFR Tech 3.
- Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System.
- Arduous level work‑capacity test passing (3‑mile hike with 45‑pound pack in 45 minutes or less).
- Valid Alaska driver’s license.
- For certain assignments: a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements may be required.
- Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 1 – starting salary $24.21 per hour.
- Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 2 – starting salary $27.25 per hour.
- Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 3 – starting salary $30.80 per hour.
