Due to growth and expansion, Northern Star (Pogo) LLC has a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Mobile Equipment Mechanic Apprentice at our world‑class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule. This position is a combination of site based work and attending classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in conjunction with the UAF Diesel/Heavy Equipment Program. The Mobile Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice reports to the Mobile Maintenance Leading Hand, and the primary role is to acquire knowledge and skills repairing and maintaining mobile heavy equipment by using hand tools, power tools and diagnostic equipment.
Duties Include:- Assist with diagnostics, breakdowns, follow‑up work, PMs in a safe and timely manner.
- Learn the workmanship by meeting standards, tolerances and testing of equipment prior to handover.
- Assist with identifying correct parts and equipment for all planned and unplanned jobs, as necessary.
- Attend daily pre‑start meetings to ensure effective communication.
- Assist with written and verbal handover for incoming crews regarding maintenance plans and issues.
- Assist with ensuring correct history is collated and effectively recorded.
- Assist in organizing all permits as required (e.g. isolations, confined space and hot work permits).
- Assist in highlighting equipment defects and issues effectively.
- Learn cost management, how to avoid rework and the unnecessary use of parts/services.
- Assist with documentation and submitting prior to the end of shift.
- Learn all safety related activities, including Hazard IDs, pre‑start checks, pre‑start meetings, and incident reporting.
- Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas.
- Other duties as required.
When not attending courses in Fairbanks, you will be working a 2‑week on 1‑week off schedule of rotating days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.
Employees are required to stay on site at the company‑provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi‑Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi‑Fi. The company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
