DefinitionThe purpose of the position is to operate equipment to support City facility maintenance operations which may include, depending on division assigned, road maintenance; sidewalk repairs; tree work and beautification of right of ways; drainage and repair of right of ways, retention ponds, drainage canals, and underground storm system. Employees in this classification perform skilled and semi-skilled work that is distinguished from that of heavy equipment operator by the complexity of the equipment and the expected results.
Responsible for regularly and competently operating a variety of motorized equipment in support of various specialized construction, maintenance and repair operations throughout the City. Assists in performing heavy manual work and may serve as a lead worker within a work crew. Flushes drain pipes, cleans drain basins, cleans sewer lines, and jets through pipes. Operates pumps of various sizes. Performs other duties as assigned.

This position performs field‑based work in outdoor environments and may require work in varying weather conditions, around traffic, construction zones, drainage systems, and active maintenance sites.
Essential Functions- Reviews work orders to determine nature of work including excavation, installing concrete, laying of pipe, repair of roadways, and mowing.
- Operates equipment including hydraulic excavator, backhoes, front‑end loader, asphalt patch truck, and lawn maintenance equipment in support of citywide maintenance and construction activities as based on assigned division.
- Transports required equipment to the job site; assists in the loading and unloading of materials and equipment transported to the work site.
- Assists other departments in scheduled and emergency operations and all other requested work within safe operation of the equipment.
- Consults procedural documentation such as vehicle manuals and maintenance manuals to insure work is performed correctly.
- Keeps records such as vehicle maintenance and gas receipts to document actions taken.
- Performs routine minor maintenance of vehicles/equipment; ensures vehicles and equipment are neat, clean and orderly; may be required to perform laboring tasks when not assigned as equipment operator.

- Responsible for guiding others, requiring a few decisions, affecting the individual and a few co‑workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions, but with some variations from the routine.
- Handles or uses machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
