Job Description

Special Education Teacher

Beginning Date: 26-27 School Year

Salary: Appropriate step on the certified salary schedule

Job Summary:

To help students learn subject matter and life skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree
  • Valid/current New Mexico teaching license with appropriate endorsement. Alternatives may be considered by the Superintendent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in the IEP process by attending IEP meetings, collaborating with team members, preparing IEP paperwork, and delivering instruction to enable students to make IEP goal progress and document that progress.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of student success that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the students’ maturity and interests in the least restrictive environment.
  • Prepare for assigned students and demonstrate written evidence of preparation upon supervisor request.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guide the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals; establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects to communicate them to students.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques, technology, and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs of the students.
  • Implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives by instruction and action.
  • Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports as required.
  • Diagnose instructional needs of students regularly and seek assistance from district specialists as required.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative procedures.
  • Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable classroom rules and maintain order fairly.
  • Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside instructional time when required or reasonably requested.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for educational assistants and/or volunteers.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as appropriate to the school or district.
  • Provide support to parents by offering resources that further their child’s health and education.
  • Closely monitor student behaviors and report progress to parents as needed.
  • Collaborate with outside therapists (physical, occupational, psychologists, counselors) and government agencies involved in the student’s life.
  • Complete all assigned duties (morning, lunch, bus).
  • Perform all duties of an elementary teacher.
  • As a special education case manager, ensure that regular education teachers receive modifications/accommodations for students on your case load.
  • Monitor teachers’ implementation of modifications/accommodations.
  • Collect and submit progress reports to the Sped Coordinator and send copies to parents each grading period as required by law.
  • Perform any other relevant duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, and talk or hear.
  • Must walk, stand, bend, squat, and move to perform any lift of school‑age children.
  • Must stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
