Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Deming, New Mexico, the Luna Energy Facility is a natural gas‑fired combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 570 MW. The plant features two GE 7FA+e combustion turbines equipped with dry low‑NOx combustion and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for advanced emissions control. Supported by two single‑reheat HRSGs and a GE D11 steam turbine generator, the Luna Energy Facility plays a pivotal role in delivering reliable and efficient power to the vibrant Deming community.
OpportunitySummary
The Chemistry Technician at the Luna Energy Facility supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a combined‑cycle power plant by maintaining precise control of water and steam cycle chemistry across cooling, condensate, feedwater, HRSG, and auxiliary systems. This role performs sampling, laboratory analysis, chemical treatment, and instrumentation calibration while trending chemistry data and responding to deviations to prevent corrosion, scaling, and equipment damage.
The position also supports startup and outage activities, ensures environmental and safety compliance, and partners with operations and maintenance teams to protect asset integrity, sustain performance, and maintain regulatory compliance.
- Conduct routine inspections of water treatment systems, including cooling towers, closed‑loop systems, and demineralizer trains, ensuring chemical control programs are operating within established limits.
- Perform sampling and laboratory analysis of condensate, feedwater, HRSG, steam, and auxiliary systems to verify compliance with plant chemistry standards and OEM/EPRI guidelines.
- Monitor and trend chemistry data from online analyzers and laboratory instrumentation; identify deviations and assist in implementing corrective actions to protect cycle chemistry integrity.
- Support chemical treatment programs by safely preparing, transferring, and injecting chemicals such as oxygen scavengers, neutralizing amines, corrosion inhibitors, and biocides in accordance with plant procedures.
- Maintain and calibrate chemistry monitoring instrumentation, including pH, conductivity, silica, sodium, and dissolved oxygen analyzers, ensuring accuracy and reliability of readings.
- Perform minor maintenance on laboratory and field equipment, including sensor replacement, tubing changes, and reagent replenishment to maintain continuous operation.
- Support startup, shutdown, layup, and outage activities by conducting chemistry system checks, line flushing, and transition monitoring during changing plant conditions.
- Assist in troubleshooting plant systems affected by off‑spec chemistry, scaling, corrosion, deposition, or condenser in‑leakage.
- Collect and analyze wastewater, effluent, and stormwater samples to ensure compliance with NPDES and applicable state discharge permits.
- Maintain chemical inventories and ensure proper labeling, storage, handling, and disposal in accordance with SDS requirements and plant safety protocols.
- Provide guidance to operations personnel on proper sampling techniques, steam purity awareness, and safe chemical handling practices.
- Communicate chemistry conditions and concerns to operations and maintenance teams, offering input on system status and recommended adjustments.
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, and routine EHS activities while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and work environment.
- Maintain accurate records in plant data systems documenting sample results, calibrations, chemical usage, and compliance activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or plant leadership to support overall plant objectives.
