City of Deming Job Vacancy Announcement:
Natural Gas Operator, Range 11, $17.36/hr.

The City of Deming is seeking qualified applicants for regular, full time Natural Gas Operator, located in the Public Works Department. Position requires a valid State of New Mexico driver's license and good driving record; previous department-related work experience is preferred. Employment is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining all required certifications.

This is skilled work within the operation of the natural gas department. Equipment used may include but is not limited to HDPE fusing machine, including the installation of Tee's, taps and couplings, effectively operate methane detection equipment (CGI, RMLD), backhoe, and utility trucks. A Natural Gas Operator is required to know, understand and regulate low-pressure and high-pressure natural gas regulator stations, replace residential and commercial meters and meter faces;

troubleshoot, repair and replace cathodic protection for steel gas lines; know, understand, and regulate mercaptan levels in the City's system including addition of mercaptan as needed; know, understand and perform correct meter turn-on and pressure dial test procedures, inspect appliances for code issues and turn off gas meters due to nonconforming appliances, and turn-on and turn-off gas service as directed by the Utility Billing department.

Operator is required to attend yearly classes on electrofusion and NMPRC/PHMSA operator qualification training and attend as directed NM8 l 1 trainings to include out of town travel on City time.

Natural Gas Operator is required to understand and operate a laptop for communication with the City Utility Billing Department to include tracking and reporting turn-ons/turn-offs, call out on possible leaks and meter reading as requested. Work includes servicing the natural gas specific equipment and making repairs as needed, when possible.

Employees are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of natural gas related equipment used in construction and maintenance activities. The operation of this equipment requires considerable manipulative skill, including ability to perform specialized tasks for which equipment is designed.

Operator may be required to perform semi-skilled laboring tasks during slack or seasonal periods.

Supervision is received from a supervisor who assigns and inspects work in progress. Employee may occasionally oversee a small group of unskilled workers. Employees may be required to respond to natural gas emergencies.

Individuals offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test and background check.

Applicant shall possess:
  • High school diploma or GED and five to seven years of related experience and/or training.
  • Working knowledge of natural gas systems, equipment, operator qualifications, and industry practices related to maintenance and installation.
  • Knowledge of safety standards, operating procedures, and hazard prevention for natural gas and construction equipment (e.g., backhoe, trencher).
  • Ability to operate natural gas and construction-related equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform sustained manual labor in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to read and write and follow technical instructions.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license; ability to manage deadlines and perform effectively in high pressure environments.
