Job summary:

To ensure the safe delivery of special education students to and from school.

Qualifications:

* commercial driver's license (class b with p&s endorsement).

* first aid/cpr certification

* sped education required training

Essential duties and responsibilities:

* shall meet the same qualifications and licensing requirements as the cdl regular driver.

* required to have or attain class b cdl with passenger and school bus endorsement. Be certified with cpr/1st aid, cpi certified and have current health card (physical)

* required to attend other special training programs as designated by the local district.

* obeys all federal school bus operational regulations, state and local policies, and traffic laws.

* maintains and keeps current transportation confidential emergency cards and other required reports.

* follows iep regulations for student transportation.

* exercises patience, understanding, and mature judgment in working with a student with disabilities.

* communicates effectively with parents and school staff.

* utilizes and safely operates the special equipment needed for each student's seating, loading and unloading.

* knows the safest and most direct route to a hospital or recognized medical center.

* arranges the seating of students, where possible, to prevent emotional or physical disturbances (but allow "normal" interaction between students).

* explains bus rules to students and enforces them.

* maintains discipline and reports to the proper school authorities when any unusual episodes, attitudes, etc., immediately and in detail, because they may have medical implications.

* willing to learn how to care for each student under the many circumstances that might occur while the students are on the bus.

* uses the appropriate procedures to take in case of a traffic accident or breakdown as they relate to the exceptionalities of the students.

* maintains the bus schedule for pick-up and delivering of students as closely as safety will permit.

* adheres to an established route unless there is an emergency.

* ensures that a student is not left unattended in the bus or at the p.m. Drop-off point.

* is trained on each student's special needs and aware on how to assist them.

* assists each student in meeting therapeutic needs as indicated by appropriate school personnel such as learning to get on and off without assistance.

* utilize safe and correct lifting techniques for students that must be physically lifted on or off the bus.

Physical requirements:

* able to bend, stoop, lift, climb.

* able to lift, move or carry up to 50 pounds of materials.

* able to climb various heights and work in confined spaces.

* able to operate large and small power driven machinery such as vacuum, steam washer, heavy water hose with sprayer and other similar equipment

Education and experience:

High school diploma or ged certificate and a cdl license with p&s endorsement.

Language skills:

* ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

* ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

* ability to use technology applications affectively.

Mathematical skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, licenses, registrations:

Valid driver's license and commercial driver's license (class b).

Valid dot health certificate
