summary

to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for students with disabilities while ensuring compliance with individualized education programs (ieps), transportation regulations, and district procedures.

qualifications
  • high school diploma or ged
  • valid commercial driver's license (cdl) class b or higher with passenger (p) and school bus (s) endorsements, or ability to obtain required endorsements within district-established timelines upon hire
  • valid dot medical examiner's certificate or ability to obtain one upon hire and maintain throughout employment
  • current first aid and cpr certification, or ability to obtain certification within district-established timelines upon hire
essential duties and responsibilities student safety and transportation
  • safely transport students with disabilities to and from assigned locations
  • operate a school bus in compliance with federal, state, local, and district regulations
  • conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report vehicle deficiencies
  • ensure no student is left unattended on the bus at any time
  • maintain assigned routes and schedules while prioritizing student safety
  • follow established emergency procedures for accidents, breakdowns, medical emergencies, or evacuations
  • maintain knowledge of nearest emergency medical facilities along assigned routes
special education transportation
  • implement transportation accommodations identified in students' ieps and transportation plans
  • safely operate wheelchair lifts, tie-down systems, child safety restraints, harnesses, and other adaptive equipment
  • utilize proper lifting, transferring, and positioning techniques when assisting students
  • monitor students during transportation and respond appropriately to medical, behavioral, and emotional needs
  • maintain awareness of each student's specific transportation requirements and emergency protocols
  • assist students in developing independence and transportation-related skills when appropriate and directed by school personnel
student management
  • establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly environment on the bus
  • communicate and enforce district transportation rules and expectations
  • use appropriate behavior management techniques consistent with district training and student needs
  • promptly report behavioral, safety, medical, or disciplinary concerns to appropriate supervisors
communication and documentation
  • maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with ferpa and district policies
  • complete required transportation records, incident reports, student documentation, and route logs accurately and timely
  • communicate effectively with parents, school staff, dispatch personnel, and supervisors regarding transportation concerns
  • participate in required meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities
other duties
  • attend district-required training related to special education transportation, safety, and student support
  • perform other transportation-related duties as assigned by the transportation director or designee
knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • knowledge of safe school bus operation and defensive driving practices
  • knowledge of special education transportation requirements and student accommodations
  • ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergencies
  • ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members
  • ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • ability to operate transportation technology, routing software, tablets, radios, and other district systems
physical requirements
  • ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle
  • ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb
  • ability to safely lift, transfer, push, or pull up to 50 pounds independently and more with appropriate assistance or equipment
  • ability to secure wheelchairs and specialized equipment
  • ability to evacuate students during emergency situations
  • ability to meet all physical requirements necessary to maintain cdl certification
work environment
  • work performed inside and outside a school bus environment
  • exposure to varying weather conditions, traffic conditions, noise, and vehicle vibrations
  • may be exposed to communicable illnesses and behavioral crises associated with student transportation
  • reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position
